when applying online for tourist visa to uk , how long for appointment after or can you chose a date??

As I recall once the application has been submitted online you are redirected to, or advised to go to, the site that gives the availability of appointments.

    What's the usual waiting time like? Able to pick an appointment the next week or have to wait longer than that?

    My partner last applied a couple of months ago and got an appointment in a day or so, there were appointments for the following day but they didn't suit.
