'Kim’s brutality could threaten regime's security'

The Korea Herald

SEOUL: -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s continued executions and purges of senior officials could foment angst and resentment among the country’s elite, and eventually threaten the security of his regime, analysts said Thursday.

The execution last month of Hyon Yong-chol, the chief of the North’s Korean People’s Armed Forces, for “dozing off at a military event and talking back” to Kim, underscored the brutality of the dictator. Hyon’s death might have unnerved top officials, by opening up the possibility that they could also be executed, the analysts noted.

“The possibility may gradually increase that those who are on the verge of being executed may do whatever it takes to secure their survival, including rising up against Kim,” said Kim Heung-kwang, chief of the Seoul-based North Korea Intellectual Solidarity

“The already deep angst among the elites would further be aggravated should Kim continue slaying the senior officials for minor things such as dozing off and even putting forward constructive ideas, which could be construed by the leader as an expression of disloyalty.”

The execution of the No. 2 man in the North’s 1.19-million-strong military was only the latest in a recent series of killings. Last month, Seoul’s National Intelligence Service said that Kim had recently ordered the execution of 15 senior officials.

Expert analyses varied over the impact of the executions on Kim’s grip on power. Yet, many agree that in the long term, the brutal approach to dealing with disgruntled members of the elite could pose a political challenge to the regime.

The brutality and madness of the guy should be a worry for the whole world. If he can execute that guy by anti aircraft gun what else is he capable of when he loses face.? The next will have to top that.

Imagine what he would like to do to the people involved in that movie the interview?

How long till he gets that enraged he lets lose a nuke? He is asian, rich and powerful after all.

All posturing. The propaganda is getting found out. He has to be seen to be bloodthirsty just to keep a lid on dissent.

It is somewhat comparable to Pol Pot in the latter stages of khmer rouge occupation. Enemies and spies everywhere, constant purges and crackdowns. He will go too far at some point but with the amounts of wmd inside the borders any overthrow would be unimaginably bloody. There is no light yet sadly

This bloke is a paranoid, dangerous man with a childlike tendency to tantrums. Worse, he is supported by China and Russia who like to see us kept on our toes about how to contain him. But China must be worried, if he does launch a nuke, China would be caught up in the response. South Korea Japan must be worried too, he may decide to attack them. The whole region is unstable now, hope no fallout (no pun intended - well sort of) drifts down to Thailand. I feel so sorry about the general population, they are just as brainwashed as his entire regime.

I understand they have basic missile technology, but not as yet able to manufacture a small enough nuclear bomb to be carried in their missiles .

I am no great fan of many American policies , but in this case I sincerely hope their intelligence services are keeping an eye on their nuclear development programmes

This guy could destroy the rather fragile peace in the whole region .

I'm completely amazed that someone hasn't bumped him off.

I think it's coming. When it happens we will need all the magical amulets in the Kingdom to protect us. China and Russia may then be forced to take control of their respective borders to prevent an influx of millions of starving refugees. South Korea will be faced with a moral crisis with what to do with its developmentally retarded brethren. During the chaos it is quite possible some lunatic will launch a nuke at the south or Japan with the goal of causing a war, and resulting in nuclear fallout casualties across Asia. This is one event that terrifies everyone and puts China on the same page as the USA and its Asian allies.

This is what happens when you have a heriditary Communist dictatorship. Marx & Lenin could not have envisaged it (or other failings).

And the heriditary line continues in unexpected places.

What is capable? Maybe of executing him again with a Howitzer, because the man was still seen walking around 1 week after he got executed by the anti-aircraft gun.

Either this North Koreans are hard to kill or the South Korean propaganda has lied again.

All these regimes end up consuming themselves through paranoia.

It occurs in an ever-tightening spiral, carving in from the outskirts of the Party to the core. Pol Pot was Brother Number One in Angkar (The Organisation); by the end, there weren't many other Brothers left.

The final days of the Kim regime will be very messy, and probably not confined to the Korean peninsula.

'Kim’s brutality could threaten regime's security' stability.

Meaning Kim's stability.

Nobody has ever threatened 'stability' of crazy regimes from outside. They are all inherently unstable from inside. Read Mark Twain.

It is the state of mind of his 'allies' that worries me the most namely

China and recently Russia embracing a paranoid loony as their 'brother'

I am sure many of his top generals are worried what their fate could be and would like to keep a low profile, just to suggest to another general or even their subordinates the idea of a coup could lead to a fate worse than death.
