More than a dozen bombs exploded in Yala on Thursday, wounding at least 11 people. Bombs were placed in 14 locations in the Southern region’s Muang district. No serious injuries or deaths were reported, according to Pramote Prommin, a spokesman for the Internal Security Operation Command.

The blasts occurred in and around the provincial capital city, but were small. Officials believe the bombs were designed to spread panic, rather than killing.

According to Gen Udomdej, the blasts were caused by pipe bombs that were planted by militants. He believes they were sending a message that they could continue insurgency in Thailand’s Southern region.

No curfew has been imposed in Yala, but people are being urged to stay in their homes as officials attempt to get the situation under control.

Officials are ordered to stay on alert in the country’s southern provinces for security reasons.

Since 2004, over 6,000 people have been killed in Thailand’s southern provinces in an insurgency waged by Muslims against the government, which is primarily Buddhist.

Officials said the bombs that were used in Thursday’s attack were the same bombs used in Yala’s Yaha district on May 4. Three pipe bombs exploded during the incident, but no injuries were reported.
