potential pickle with passport/visa/travel

Featured Replies

I have 2 pages left in my UK passport, my Extension of Stay (thai wife) needs renewing august but the boss needs me to do a business trip also around july.

So my pickle is if i go and renew my passport i belive they take my passport or snip it and you are not allowed to use it, but if i dont renew it and go on the trip when it comes to renew my visa i wont have enough pages in my book ( i currently have EOS based on thai wife)

is there anyway around this, if you ask are you allowed to use your passport while the renewal is being processed, or any other suggestions?

thanks

Once a new passport is applied for the "old" passport is not valid for travel .smile.png

Given its currently the middle of May I suspect the OP is fully aware of the first point in the previous post.

It seems you have enough time to apply for your new passport and have the new one back before your trip in July.. The latest reports are that it takes 3 weeks or less to get the new one.

See the long topic about UK passports that is just a few topics below this one on the forum.

Do anybody know if immigrationm will renew EOS if only 1 page left in passport? the problem is the travel maybe mid june - july so msy get away with renewing passport after trip and visa but it depends if thai immigration specify minimum pages or whether its a case of just if they can fit the stamp in they will renew!!

Is that a UK thing?

My experience is that the old one is not cancelled until you get the new one.

If it fits, they will stamp.

Of course you will need to get a new passport soon.

It is a UK thing. When they receive the application in the UK they cancel it it in their data base.

Joe, I know you're the visa expert and a guru and everything, but it makes no sense at all for a UK passport to be cancelled once the application is received, but before the applicant actually has it in his/her hands. What if it is lost in transit? What if the applicant has a horrid accident and is in a coma and unable to claim it? What if, what if? Plus, there is no assurance that the applicant has actually received their passport. Where is the signed receipt? If I were a British subject, I'd be pretty upset about this provision, the fact that I'd be left without a valid passport for several weeks. It just doesn't make sense.

There is a 113 page thread in this forum about British passport applications.

When you apply you retain your existing passport. At this point your existing passport is not physically cancelled. A few days later when your application is processed and payment is taken from your credit/debit card your existing passport is electronically cancelled and entered onto a database as not valid for travel. It is believed that this database is shared with some, but not all countries. The UK passport office doesn't explain the exact process, probably for reasons of security.

When you collect your new passport the corners of your old passport are cut off to physically cancel it.

Could you get away with a land border crossing to a neighbouring country using an electronically cancelled passport? Probably. Would you get away with flying into the US? I doubt it.

Apparently they cancel when application is processed because they only process the application and have no idea when the applicant gets the new passport is received the way their passport application process is done. The passports are sent out by courier to the individual or as is the case here their agent.

It is not like our home country where you make a trip to the embassy (or consulate) to apply and then pickup your passport. It is more like the way they do it by mail back there.

"Could you get away with a land border crossing to a neighbouring country using an electronically cancelled passport?"

Depends on whether or not it is the practice of the Thai and/or neighbouring country immigration officers to swipe the photopage through a scanner, as is standard practice at airports these days, I would have thought.

No longer the case, unfortunately. HMPO now send all replacement passports from the UK to their henchmen in With-It Tower, Bangkok, and applicants (or their agents) are required to make another trip there for physical collection purposes.

I had a similar predicament , 2 pages left and about to start work in Malaysia , with WP taking up 1 page, so I took a chance and renewed and it was back in 2 weeks , would have been faster if not for the National holidays at the start of May

As OJAS said, UK passports have to be collected from a building on Sukhumvit 13. It would be nice if they were couriered to you instead.

You misread my post. I was referring to VFS as the agents not the individuals agent.

It would be better to use the quote button.

My apologies - I didn't mean to misrepresent what you said. It was a genuine mistake on my behalf.
