The Reflecting Pool Debacle: Metaphor of Trump's Administration

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

For those unaware, the Reflecting Pool is part of the National Mall, running from in front of the Lincoln Memorial to near the Washington Monument.

Trump decided---while ostensibly trying to run both a country and a war (into the ground)---that he would turn it into "American Flag Blue" as part of the 250th Anniversary of the United States.

Trump seems obsessed with the Reflecting Pool. He even displayed graphics comparing its horizontal length to the vertical height of major buildings like the Empire State Building, as if that means anything. (Note: he did not compare it to China's Great Wall, so we're saved that absurdity, while substituting another.) Anyway, Trump seems to have an obsession with making sure people think things are bigger than they actually are, if you know what I mean.

The manner in which this pool cleaning unfolded is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with both Trump and his tenure as the supposed leader of a major democracy.

First, it is yet another vanity project, part of how his woeful personal insecurity drives him. Everything has to be about him, from trying to share glory with a beloved former President by installing his name on the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, to his Trumpian Arch, to his giant banner displaying his mug on the supposedly independent Dept of Justice, to his celebratory concert that has morphed into another Trump rally for the 4th of July. (One wonders how prominent will be the mention of Arnold Palmer's junk?).

Second, the $14.2 million contract to clean the pool and make it blue was dealt in a no-bid manner to a 2 major Trump donors, people who evidenced no ability to carry out the required pool changes.

Third, the contractor did a very poor job. He drained the pool, supposedly cleaned it, and then laid down a blue tarp all the way along its bottom with what he thought was the right kind of glue to withstand years under water. Next he refilled the pool with unfiltered water from the Potomac River, instead supposedly utilizing some procedure called nanobubbler technology.

The Potomac, being a natural waterway, contained algae. Now present in a shallow pool during a hot spring and summer in DC, the algae did what algae are wont to do: reproduce. Algae tends more toward a green color than blue, so the hoped-for American Flag Blue wasn't going to happen. The contractor decided the algae could not stand up to hydrogen peroxide, so he had crew pour hundreds of gallons of it into the pool. The liquid did wipe out some of the algae, albeit along the edges of the pool. The inner rectangle remained algae green. It's possible the hydrogen peroxide also interacted with the glue used to hold down the blue tarp, or perhaps the glue was just not meant to be soaked by water, or never properly set. In any event, the tarp began to separate from the bottom, with large pieces floating on top of the water.

Unable to accept failure or blame, nor to be questioned as to why he awarded the contract in a no-bid manner to a donor, Trump made up excuses. He tried to find people to blame. Proof of involvement is not something necessary in MAGA and Trump's world; accusation equals guilt.

Trump instantly "concluded" the pool had been sabotaged by "deranged radical leftists and Dumocrats", though obviously he made this accusation without evidence. An unfortunate visitor to the pool, who happened to be a former US Olympian, reached into the pool to examine a piece of the floating blue tarp. He was instantly arrested and charged with the vandalization of Trump's vanity project. Trump raged in a series of bizarre Tweets, and the Dept of the Interior issued an obviously false statement claiming the Reflecting Pool was "crystal clear", and using its statement both to disparage the rent-free resident residing in Trump's addled brain (Obama) and boast about Trump's war prowess. Yes, don't believe you lying eyes.

So what can be done now? The entire $14.2 million was wasted. It's a total loss. To get the pool "American Flag Blue", the entire pool would have to be drained again and dried, so that a new and better blue tarp could be laid, and then something better than "nonobubbler technology" would have to be used to make sure algae did not reappear.

So it's all a mess now. McArthur's Park has melted in the rain, so to speak.

This is all so Trumpian: vanity, corruption, incompetence, US Taxpayer money wasted, failure to accept responsibility, blame of others, prosecution without evidence of a crime, and manufacturing of an alternate reality.

Poor, poor Donald, wouldn't you think someone in his extensive MAGA team with an IQ above idiot level would take him in hand and help him to stop posting such brain dead comments, or better still keep him occupied 24/7 with a Lego set and little trophies everytime he completes a 4 year olds project.

On the upside, Trump has at last found something he can’t kill merely by touching it.

The quality of the water in the reflecting pool is a direct metaphor for the condition of Trump's mind, the lack of clarity and the extraordinary lack of coherence. He is a toxic mass.

Saint Donald. Total revisionist history, a complete reformation of his entire career, and a total erasure of his past crimes, moral terpitude, and a total and complete willingness to overlook a lifetime of moral bankruptcy.

I do have some friends that will come right out and say the man is a butthead, he's an idiot, and he's an absolute clown, but I like his policies. Those are the Republicans I admire.

During the 20 years that Clinton, Obama and Biden were in office I was continually critical of their policies. Just look back at some of my posts when Obama and Biden were in power. I was not a big fan of Obama for many of the years that he was president and my posts reflect that. As a centrist democrat I criticized a lot of his policies.

I see so little of that coming from Republicans these days, to point where their absolute fealty is actually quite frightening. Most just can't handle critique of Trump, they immediately clam up, get defensive and start making it personal. Instead of behaving like rational intellectuals and debating policy they just start throwing out nonsense, accusations that I've never criticized my own party, or that I get paid to be critical of Trump. That is not only ridiculous, it is inane. I wish somebody would offer to pay me to criticize Trump. I would spend my whole day doing it.

Criticism and open mindedness is what independent thinkers engage in, and it sets them apart from dogmatic subjects of a wannabe king. I invite you to reflect on that for just a moment.

With many people, once they got attached to a theory, it was hard to get them detached. They’d screen out unhelpful facts, invent favorable ones, and ignore contradictions in their own claims. Look at those Sandy Hook, multiple fraud convictions, and Jan. 6th truthers, babbling about false flags and crisis actors and all the rest. When people were motivated enough to believe something, they were going to believe it no matter what. There was no such thing as a bridge too far.

Yes, the secret is out. Us liberals can make algae grow with our minds. It's a kind of telekinesis available only to lefties. Sorry. We can also rip tarp from the bottom of a pool. It's quite the parlor trick. We've kept that skill hidden since the nation's founding, but I guess it's now out in the open. Might as well come clean.

It's similar to how Trump could declassify all those documents he stole with his mind.

BTW, if you have evidence of non-psychokinetic vandalization, which might hold up better in court than libby mind control, Todd Blanche is waiting for your call.

Wouldn't it be funny if suddenly the remaining unreleased 3 million pages of the Epstein Files are found floating in the Reflecting Pool? THAT would be a great lefty trick!

While this is a good post. some of the technical details are wrong! There is no "tarp" (A tarp is a large sheet of strong, flexible, waterproof or water-resistant material) or glue! what was used was a Polyurea Membrane spray-applied and if fact they used the wrong type they used Pipeliner 5000 which is used to coat the internals of pipes and it deteriorate in sunlight it is Not UV resistant and it delaminates

So much talk of vandalism and sabotage! For several days I was convinced that the vandalism was the work of Messrs Obama and Clinton, masterminded by Biden.

I am now coming round to the view that it is the fiendish work of Giorgia Melloni - no doubt security footage will emerge which shows a small blonde in a tan trouser suit casting spells and releasing algae into the pool.

Of course it could just be a cock up, but surely that is unlikely?

Yes, we non Republicans are truly evil people.

All Democrats are communist.

All Democrats are baby killers.

All Democrats support trans rights.

All democrats are woke.

Do you know where we get our power from? We drink the blood of infants in basements of pizza parlors. Delicious, healthy and builds strong brains.

Many MAGA supporters and Trump devotees are so locked in and so hypnotized and deluded, from consuming liters of Kool-Aid that they're consuming daily, that they consider any criticism of Disaster Don to be tantamount to being a traitor and hating America.

So, where can I turn myself in, and who should I turn myself into, so that I can be tried for sedition against my nation?

Once I'm found guilty how will the punishment be carried out? Will it be through electrocution, or the gas chamber, or will it be boring old lethal injection? Perhaps they will they hang me? Perhaps I will be one of the first to be brought before the Trump/Miller newly formed firing squads?

I need that information so we can proceed with my execution. You need to provide that and show us that you're a truly patriotic American.

here is a picture of the "master" mind behind the renovation of the reflecting pool... The grifter's excuse

Specifically, he claimed people had "some form of knife and blade" and made a 250-foot-long gash. He also claimed "corrosive and destructive" chemicals were poured into the pool.

just see how he speaks about himself

I just inspected it, and could only say to myself, and those gathered around me, WOW, who would do such a thing? SICK, DERANGED PEOPLE!"

He then capped it off by threatening a casual 10-year prison sentence "for such destruction."

But forget the 10-year prison sentences, because the internet has discovered the guy who was actually hired to fix the pool in the first place.

Nice illogical swamp of: Appeal to Authority, False Cause, Strawman, Hasty Generalization, Confirmation Bias, and Emotional Framing.....

Trump claimed vandals used a ‘knife or box cutter’ to cut a 350-foot gash in the new pool liner, without evidence.

But arrests don’t change the physical evidence: chemical blistering suggests installation failure, not vandalism. No blade explains pool-wide peeling, and people were detained for picking up already-loose debris.

Threatening long sentences reframes a construction failure as a crime scene.

Bad construction isn’t vandalism—a grift to a buddy contractor, and ultimately a sole Trump failure.

Trump says 'vandals' slashed reflecting pool, hasn't shown evidence - The Washington Post

You are correct this is Application failure poor quality control, bad workmanship ! the product used was not intended for this purpose, the product is NOT UV Tolerated it will de-laminate, if fully hardened it is not possible to cut it with a knife or box cutter

Known Limitations

  1. Continuous UV Exposure: As an MDI-based formulation, constant unprotected sun exposure can cause it to oxidize, chalk, or fade over time. Specialized topcoats (like Rhino Shine) are occasionally used to restore its look.

  2. Chemical Vulnerability: It is highly sensitive to strong oxidizers and chemical treatments, which can cause the material to degrade or delaminate.

By putting in hydrogen peroxide they are just making it worse the blind leading the blind !!

  3. Preparation: Substrates must be completely cured, dry, and mechanically abraded (e.g., sandblasted) with an appropriate bonding agent to prevent peeling.

I wonder if anybody in trumps admin know what they are doing !! There are 2 problems Algae and the liner to fix IMHO the polyurethane/polyurea will all have to be removed and correct product applied, but i dough that, they will just try to patch with same product, to teat the Algae you need chemicals, but the Chemicals affect the coating so we go around in circles, money after money !!

Kerry McQuisten:

Warren G. Harding built it on swampland and the structure beneath it would have been fine - if it had been built on stable ground. The whole thing started sinking slowly. Presidents all the way up through Carter kept trying to prop it up with little cement pours, and regularly draining and cleaning it. Algae was a problem even then because there was no real circulation system. No pumps. No filters.
Reagan added some more concrete, realizing the entire pool was now 12 or 13 inches lower than it should be. It had sunk over a foot and pulled loose from its structure. Clinton publicly acknowledged that the entire pool needed demolished and rebuilt, and that it would take hundreds of millions of dollars to do it right. The Bushes just kept trying to plug leaks and clean it. Every time they had to drain and scrub the thing, it cost around $100,000 to do so. George W. Bush actually had plans drawn up to rebuild it. Obama decided to revise and execute the Bush renovation, which was needed, but it was flawed, and he spent tens of millions of dollars on it. He raised the pool up with a timber under-structure so the water ended up being even shallower, which means that’s the point at which the water started getting warmer. He also turned off the chlorinated city water supply into the pool and began pumping water in from the tidal basin - that’s the somewhat stagnant water that comes in from the Potomac River and surrounds the Jefferson Memorial.
There was algae before, but with those changes came even more algae. Obama‘s reasoning was that the basin water would be cheaper instead of using the city water supply. He had the pool tiles removed from the bottom and another layer gray cement put in place along with gray-tinted reflective paint, which gradually faded away. By the time Trump’s first term came around, the cleaning had to be done every three or four months, some of the Obama structural repairs were failing, and the leaks were rampant again. By the time Biden got into office, Obama’s reflecting pool fixes were cracked and the pool was leaking hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of gallons of water. Biden opted to clean the pool, but performed little maintenance, and did no substantial refurbishment.

Trump’s fix was to try something that the other presidents hadn’t. Whereas Obama had used a gray reflective paint and cement, Trump tried a combination sealant liner - it isn’t paint. Those sealants are similarly light-reflective to what Obama used. Trump switched up to blue from the dark gray. He added nanobubblers. When we walked around it the other day, there was only a small patch on the middle of the left side that may have been coming up. It was too windy and stormy to see why. It was not as if the sealant was coming up all over the pool and floating to the top because it wasn’t. We did see the algae cleaning going on and the crews, you could tell, were tired of being harassed for doing their jobs.

Vandals have damaged the grass, they’ve cut into the liner in other places and the knife lines are clear in the videos. We did see the National Guard soldiers coming in. We also saw them placed around the America 250 construction area and in between the museums. Five vandals have been arrested since we walked through. It’s unbelievable to me that they want to destroy something we could all enjoy out of hatred for a president whose policies they don’t even understand. And the mainstream media is reprehensible. They aren’t reporting. They’re spinning propaganda as usual.

He used the wrong type of polyurethane/polyurea Coating
