I was chatting with a courageous farang lady at my place of employment who has always struggled with excessive weight.

She's embraced change and has modified her diet, goes for long walks and is on a personal trainer managed weight loss gym program.

I've seen great changes and she's looking slimmer than ever and now appears taller.

She confided that its resulted in excess skin around her tummy and above the hip areas.

She didn't realize the skin issue until it started appearing.

I suggested a tummy tuck but she said she can't afford it.

Is this procedure a safe and relatively cheaper option in Thailand?

What sort of costs are we talking about and where would one seek a reference?

Would it require a long hospital stay and how soon could one travel after the procedure?

Many thanks.

It's called abdominoplasty and costs vary with hospital and surgeon but roughly 10 - 150 K baht at a hospital, which is the only place this should be considered.

It will leave a scar, which is something to consider, i.e. is the loose skin worse than a scar?

A much less invasive option is laser treatment and or radio frequency, , but it really depends on the extent of the loose skin and how much skin elasticity there is (and also whether there is still a lot of fat in the abdomen as that can be removed during abdominoplasty as well). Laser and r/f treatments may nto remove all the sag but if done correctly can certainly reduce it.

She really needs to be evaluated by a plastic surgeon as there is no "one size fits all" solution. The degree of loose skin, the underlying skin elasticity, all make a difference. Abdominoplasty is usually done when there is a large amoutn of skin, such as an "apron" of it hanging down. If it is just a little loose skin, laser and/or r/f would likely be a better choice but understand the results will be partial not total.

I suggest she start by doing a virtual consult with yanhee, attaching photos, and see what they suggest. www.yanhee.net

Thanks Cheryl.

That's a huge variation (10 - 150 k).

Does it depend on how much skin is involved?

Sorry no, that was a typo. It is 100-150K. You will not get an abdomininoplasty in a reputable hospital for much less than 100,000 baht. This is major surgery involving a large incision and general anesthesia. Between this fact and the scar it will leave, woirth it only for really large hanging bits of skin, I don;t think worth it for just a little skin loseness. For that I would try laser/RF treatments, which will cost much less as well, though they will only improve the situation not 100% remove all loose skin.
