British tourist reportedly raped in Kanchanaburi

I have a question for all the "I am not blaming the victim, but..."-ists!

As far as I understand, we are talking about a young adult, it was 1:20 at night, she had a few drinks and went on a 300m long walk, by herself, when she got attacked and raped, correct?

A main road, with some traffic even at that point at night, in a mid-sized town, right?

And you are all saying, that she should have been more cautious, correct?

I'm saying she shouldn't have been drinking illegally. Shouldn't have been out on her own.

Did she never watch the news or read a newspaper ..... Koh Tao, etc.

Underage drinking laws are to stop teens getting drunk then doing foolish stuff like having sex, driving m/cs., etc.

My teen isn't allowed out on her own ever, day or night. Thailand's a dangerous place for young girls.

PS

If I get drunk then walk out in front of a car who's to blame?

Me or the car driver?

What an utterly stupid comparisson.

Unless the driver is willingly running you over +harming you, how does that example compare to a rape-situation?

...and so the victim- blaming continuous!

And when you turn 20 you magically can (or is ok) have sex while drunk? My experience is that 18 or 20 has no difference as they are all pretty damn naive.

And a news flash to you, if "your teen" is 18 or older you got nothing to say about her goings as she is an adult (i'm excluding most muslim nations and Thailand).

While she lives off me, she does as she is told.

To make matters worse, she probably had to tell the story multiple times, in lurid detail, to cops gathered around.

I bet dollars to donuts that at least some cops know who the perps are. It's not a big city. But just as assuredly, Thai cops hate to implicate fellow Thais, particularly if they're buddies.

Even if they find the guys, they'll probably be let out the side door when no one is looking, like the guy who raped the Dutch girl in Krabi. He admitted it at first, and then hours later changed his story so cops let him go with a pat on the back.

New message which TAT should post at every entry point: Welcome to Thailand. If you're an attractive female, don't drink too much alcohol - and certainly don't walk around anywhere without an escort past 9 pm. We can't be responsible for what Thai men do, so you're on your own. Enjoy your vacation, and be sure to spend a lot of money each day - so you can qualify to be a 'quality tourist.'

Poor lass, so drunk that she lost her common sense. Of course, getting a lift with some random Thai teenagers in that state was really daft; is she to blame?... yes.

It may not be a 'PC' thing to say, but if being 'PC' means not being able to tell your daughters that it's bloody stupid to go out, get drunk and then get a lift with some random guy then I'll happily be non 'PC' on this one.

Of course I do not blame the victim, but seriously, why do teenage tourists think getting drunk in a 3rd world country and wandering around like it's Disney World. Most Thai people have little and nothing to lose, they are not governed by the same controls found in the Nanny states. Tourist need to relaize that coming here and getting drunk and stoned and taking chances is not a good idea. I hope the catch the rapist and throw away the key, but of course, they will likely get 3 yrs, and then only if they are over 18.

You just did blame the victim.

Why do holiday makers think they can wear a bikini in when on holiday.

Why did the man have his money in his pocket when he was drinking.

Why did the girl smile and chat with the taxi driver.

It is your attitude that continues to give excuses to violent behaviour.

She is on holiday. She went out for drinks. She walked back to her hotel. She chatted to some friendly motorcycle guys. As you chat with friendly girls.

Maybe they offered her a ride back to the hotel.

She did nothing wrong.

This government needs to step up punishment of offences against foreigners.especially crimes of rape and violence. Nobody cares about a bag snatch or a scam here and there for a few hundred baht. The violence against foreigners in this country is the worst in the entire world.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but Thailand is very, very, far away from being the most violent against foreigners. You might want to travel more before making this statement. I feel safer here than in 30 different countries. South Africa you can not be out after dark. Caracas, even with police with machine guns every 30 feet, is filled with thieves. Go to Tijuana or Juarez. You will catch the next plane back to Thailand for safety.

Some suspect remarks there for sure.

I've had many a holiday in South Africa and always went out after dark.

Cape Town,Bloomfontein,Turfontein to name a few.

So you think a young lass getting drunk and then getting a lift with a random guy, especially in Thailand, isn't being stupid? Get real.

I think it is utterly contemptible to blame a victim.

The only one to blame for this rape is the rapist.

^Bluespunk....Nothing to the misfortune of a young lass listening to you and taking on board your attitude to this, to find out that you're wrong as she files a rape report.

Teaching young girls to stay out of harm's way is an essential part of parenting, and your attitude would put a young girl at risk.

Never said that people shouldn't be taught how to be safe.

Only that it is contemptible to say someone is responsible for being a victim.

The only person responsible for a rape is the rapist.

No it's not, however what is essential is to tell boys that they treat girls well and leave girls the <deleted> alone if the girls don't want anything to do with them and never hit nor touch girls inapropriatelly.

So true, as they come to Thailand and take on more inherent risk than in their country of origin. They think they are bulletproof, and they forget to leave their entitlement and personality disorders at the boarding gate.

Add onto this the Thai Buddhist "My Bpen Rai" philosophy of death, and inherently dangerous conditions in Thailand and VOILA..

You have a perfect storm for foreigner fatalities, rapes, etc..sad.png

You're saying that teaching young girls to avoid these situations is not an essential part of parenting ? Are you mad?

Is it really more dangerous here than where they live?

For this type of crime, yes. I'm from the UK and yes, there are some rough areas. However, gang rapes of this nature are extremely rare. Violent crime isn't, no.

Unfortunately, I'd hazard a guess there were racial influenced motivators involved in this that sets Thailand apart from the UK on this type of crime. I don't believe there is the inferiority, Jealousy, racist issues among young Brits that exist here in Thailand.

I don't say this lightly (my wife is Thai) and I may be well off, but that's how I perceive Thailand and Thais from personal experience after many years living. Don't get me wrong, I'm not tainting all Thai men with the same brush but there's a lot of pent up negativity towards westerners out there that is quits disconcerting. Unfortunately, some animals will take that out on an easy young and female target.

I'd like to spend a few minutes alone with each of them that's for sure. I don't think they'd be doing it again!

There is a lot higher crime in Edinburgh than here.

A particular nasty crime was committed which gets the guys in Nana plaza falling off their bar stools whilst abusing poor uneducated desperate farm girls from Isarn. It kinda raises their self-esteem to shout at the rapists.

Oh aye, gun carrying and crime a plenty in drizzly Edinburgh eh! Can hire a neighbour or tech college acquaintance any time of the day and cheaply to bump of the <deleted> shagging your wife an all! People going missing all the time due to pissing off the wrong person etc etc. Loss of face = loss of life on a regular and random basis. Nevermind the violence and rapes that go unreported every day of the week across the country for obvious reasons.

A bunch of drunks kicking the <deleted> out of each other at the weekend does not come close to what goes on in Thailand in any way, shape or form mate.

So telling girls "you have a vagina and you have to be careful of retards with penises "just because"" is better than telling boys "do not take out your penis and show it to people without them wanting to see it and never ever touch a girl who doesn't want to be touched oh and raping girls is bad. Very bad mmmmkaaay"?

Maybe time to update your archaic views and realize that girls are equal to men and men have no rights whatsoever to control women (once again excluding many muslim nations).

Yep, nailed it!

Consenting adults and paid service is exactly the same as rape!

Troll!

Look up some stats. A person is more likely to be raped in the UK than Thailand, and Australia, USA and New Zealand have way more rapes than here per capita.

And then you throw the "Thais hate us and that's why they rape" statement out there.

Off base, way off base.

If that's your impression of Thailand I'd lock the doors and stay indoors until the plane leaves.
