We’re obviously using different sources, Pat. Regardless, both countries are behind North Korea & Uzbekistan. If you’ve ever traveled in the US, esp the South, you’d know how literate the locals are. You’re right, Thailand has almost no immigration, except for temporary workers. I have no idea how literate or not Cambodian, Burmese & Lao labourers are. They’re not included in the stats. If the US really is 99% literate, those first-gen immigrants must have PhDs! As for illegals, México is nearly 95% literate, likely in Spanish. All immigrant kids, legal and illegal, go to school. I’m sure they would therefore be included in the 16 and over stats. However, that’s an enormous gap: your 99% and my 76%! I would never intentionally obfuscate the facts. I guess the fact is, we really don't know!
