Although the local media likes to publicize mostly petty crimes like this that happen in Pattaya, Bangkok, and Phuket, the reality is that these Thai tourist cities are actually safer than most western tourist places--and not just for petty crimes but for violent crimes, as well. Per Google: No, Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya do not have more petty crime than other major tourist cities across the globe. In fact, these Thai hubs consistently track much lower for violent crime, physical muggings, and aggressive theft than major urban destinations in Western Europe, the Americas, or parts of Africa.
