PATTAYA: -- In the early hours of Tuesday a 48 year old woman suffered a Diabetic episode prior to her being involved in a violent street robbery.

The incident occurred in East Pattaya as Khun Patarawadee, who works as a Masseur, was driving home on her motorbike. She took a wrong turn up Soi Tanwa 5 which is when she encountered two men on a motorbike, who cut across her and ordered her to stop.

She had no choice and stopped her bike. The passenger on the other bike lunged towards her and struck her over the head, with what she believes to be the butt of a Gun.

The man then stole her shoulder bag which contained 3,000 Baht in cash and her Samsung Smart Phone. She also believes the men then stole her motorbike before fleeing the scene.

Khun Patarawadee collapsed and vomited and she told Police that this was a sign that she was about to go into Diabetic Shock. She managed to walk to a friend’s house, where Khun Sarawut aged 48 immediately called the Police Emergency Number 191.

What's Diabetic has to do with it? you can go in to a shock being robbed for sure, but it has

nothing to do with being a diabetic... or maybe I'm wrong...

Agree with you, as a diabetic it does not make sense.

Feel so sad for the lady. This kind of personal violation is shocking.

But this is how Thai culture has developed.

And without realistic penalties for crimes, especially this kind of crime, can only see an increase.

There is so much wrong with this article I can't even laugh.

First of all who ever heard of (implied here) an attack causing a diabetic shock. Maybe she was going into a diabetic shock, but the article is implying the attack brought it on.

Second the article goes on to say she suffered the diabetic shock "prior" to being involved in a street robbery. When you read the headline and article that timing is reversed.

Thirdly, she "believes her bike was also stolen by the robbers"? Did she blackout? If so, that was left out of the article. She collapsed and vomited...nothing about a blackout.

A diabetic shock is the contrary, its a severe and sudden hypoglycaemia, could lead to coma and death.

I feel really sorry for the lady. There is absolutely NO excuse for this sort of behavoir in a country like Thailand where noone needs go to bed hungry. If it is meth heads they might as well rob a minimart without injuring anyone.

In my opionion this scum should be shot right on the spot. Coldhearted people like this are never going to change and society will be much better off without them.

"She managed to walk to a friend’s house, where Khun Sarawut aged 48 immediately called the Police Emergency Number 191. There was no answer which forced the victim and her friend to present themselves to Nongprue Police Station where they demanded assistance."

Of course they try to be "a world class tourist resort" but don't even bother to pick up the freaking phone even though there's cops at the station. Says a lot, really.

Why would she make a wrong turn, surely she knows the way home?

I was wondering if she was already suffering from the first stages of diabetic shock? (taken insulin but not consumed enough sugar), may be victim of opportunist thieves...

Maybe the hit on the head was falling off the bike?

Just as a comment with Diabetes Type 11 there is hyperglycemia that can cause diabetic shock. Type 11 is not uncommon in my wife's Thai extended family (Thais consume lots of sugar in their diet) and more often than not, very poorly managed. A few in her family have died and a few with amputations due to Type 11. My specialist for diabetes 11 has warned me that stress / trauma significantly increases blood sugar levels. I don't know how quickly it would accelerate blood sugar in the case of major trauma to cause coma for those with existing high blood sugar levels

No, you are not wrong - diabetic shock occurs when your blood sugar levels drop too low.
