Thai Students Detained at Pakistani Airport for 'Carrying Firearms'
By Khaosod English

BANGKOK — Five Thai students are in police custody in Pakistan for attempting to smuggle firearms and ammunition on to a plane headed for Bangkok, a Thai government spokesperson said.

According to Maj.Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd, the five students were detained by security officers at Lahore Airport while they were boarding the plane on 8 June.

"The airport staff discovered firearms and ammunition, which are forbidden from carrying onboard aircrafts," Maj.Gen. Sansern said, without giving further details.

He said Thai diplomats are already in contact with the students.

It's being reported elsewhere that the five students had been studying at a religious school and were heading back to Thailand for their summer holidays.......!!

The UK Sky TV news are also reporting this story.

I am assuming these lads were not contemplating highjacking, but attempting to take weapons home for personal use or sale. Even so, it was incredibly stupid.

About as dumb as it gets.

Could be. Could also be a test of the security system for future operations.

I find it strange tht they attempt to take weapons from a country like Pakistan. Maybe they don't know that it has a reputation of harbouring and supporting terrorists.

I hope the Thai diplomats trying to contact the students offer a fair price for the weapons and ammunition. coffee1.gif

Yep, it's easy enough to get weapons and arms in Thailand from the redshirt surplus of war toys stolen from the army. Why travel to Pakistan?

Nothing strange about buying weapons in Pakistan,

Trying to smuggle them out of the country via the airport that's strange and stupid

Different version in BKK Post that reports one 9mm pistol was found, but all five arrested. Went on to say the five were studying at a religious school in NW Pakistan. NW Pakistan is a known area for Islamic extremists. Unless the students received scholarships from Pakistan, strange the Thai government (assists with funding for Islamic studies overseas) would permit studying at that location.

I can think of a few other sources of funding for their "studies".

Yer, how did they think they would ever get away with it---its quite difficult hiding anything from those Paki's...........unless of course you happen to be the worlds number 1 terrorist living 3 miles down the road from the biggest Paki military camp who are all out hunting hunting for you..................coffee1.gif

So a single firearm with ammo, during the X-Ray screening?

There goes the smuggling weapons theory!

Explain...?

Did you see the second article lower in the thread?

I don't think they were smuggling weapons for sale/ use in Thailand.

So WHY did a Thai kid SOURCE a 9mm in that country to bring back to LOS.......?

There's really only two explanations for this type of thing. If smuggling is not the reason, then it must have been the other one.

Apparently they claimed that it was given to them wrapped in a jacket which was to be handed over to a Malaysian man once they reached Thailand and that they weren't aware of the gun.

Doesn't sound very plausible but................

Religous school in Pakistan, sounds dodgy from the start.

Known breeding grounds for terrorists.

Where do these kids come from? The south possibly?

Having said that with the ammount of weapons readily available here, they must be really dumb to do this!
