New court to deal with 3 rising crimes
THE SUNDAY NATION

BANGKOK: -- THE CRIMINAL COURT has set up a new division to deal specifically with cases involving human smuggling, corruption and illegal drugs in order to help speed up the trials of such cases, a senior judiciary official said yesterday.

Sarawut Benjakul, deputy secretary-general of the Office of the Judiciary, said that the Criminal Court had to deal with a large number of cases involving those crimes.

"Cases of human smuggling, corruption and illegal drugs are complex and involve suspects who are well connected and influential. So the trial is often difficult," Sarawut said. "We believe the new division will improve the efficiency of trials."

He said that the Office of the Judiciary had prepared for the establishment of the new division for a year.

The division's establishment has been announced in the Royal Gazette, with effect from Friday.

I have been summoned to the local taxation office tomorrow, to pay an excise bill that should total no more than 1,000B according to excise law and tariffs. In my experience the chance of being charged the correct tariff is zero, where is the profit in that. I will record the extortion for amusement, where should I post the video evidence of government employees extorting the public? What could possibly go wrong in whistle-blowing? 555

Until every single transaction with police/govt is no longer fraudulent, and carried out with general nastiness by officials relishing their untouchable status, the fight against corruption is merely a bad joke.

Is a court to deal with human trafficking needed, hasn't LoS successfully cracked down and sorted it all out ?

Of course it does sound good especially for international consumption.

It is a response to the huge increase in the number of prosecutions now occurring, at least as far as corruption and human trafficking are concerned.

Does everything concerned with the junta have to be viewed negatively?

What large number of corruption prosecutions ?

A police general pled guilty to a lot of offences but it started from a matter we can't discuss.

Civil servants etc have been transferred, moved to inactive posts and there's the 2 lists of supposedly corrupt officials that are still being ' checked 'but where are the prosecutions ?

Work in progress, be patient. You didn't answer my question.

No not everything is viewed negatively and equally not everything has to have a positive response.

I will now write out 500 times " Halloween''s questions must be answered. "

If this is really a work in progress does it mean when the special court gets going it will speed things up and there will be a conveyor belt of corruption cases being heard or will it be business as usual with plenty of reasons why matters are delayed ?

No "must" involved, simply a matter of politeness.

I have no idea whether there will be a speed increase. A new court should start with a clean docket so there is some hope, but lawyers still bill by the hour.

BTW it seems Prayuth has done a deal to (further) delay the UDD leaders cases. Bad move IMHO.

If you want to believe Yingluck's FB page then sure, "her government" cracked down and sorted it. Just like there was no corruption in "her government"

Now, how many people were arrested, prosecuted and convicted during the Yingluck years? Remember someone pleading with Tarit to get the DSI involved but he ignored it as he was busy hounding evil cartoonists and any who dare question the words of the caddy.

How many years go by before cases come to court here? Depends who you are of course. But many posts moan (including you, and rightly so) about the lack of cases being brought to conclusion - or never reported on after arrests are made.

Many have been transferred out of office so they can't interfere with or influence the investigations and evidence gathering - as they would have previously done.

Now, we have to wait and see if these courts will be different or if wealth, position, family, connections and backroom deals will still be the order of the day.

I wish them luck. There are no rising crimes. They were there but allowed to happen all in the name of money.

Before opening this article, I thought "which 3 crimes are they "cracking down" on?". I figured new special court to crack down on nose blowers, lottery over chargers and pretty girls serving beer. Those seem to be focus of new tough lean anti corruption enforcers. LM go to traditional well worn courts.
