BANGKOK: -- The broadcasting commission will on Monday consider scrapping analog TV broadcasts of three state-run TV stations and Thai PBS independent station.

Ms Supinya Klangnarong, a member of the commission, said that under Section 74 of the provisional chapter of the broadcasting act B.E. 2551, all analog TV frequencies must be returned to the state within five years.

The three state-owned operators of analog TVs are Channel 5 of the army, Channel 9 of Mass Communications Organisation of Thailand and Channel 11 of Public Relations Department.

Ms Supinya said that the scrapping of analog TV broadcasts must be tabled to the cabinet for consideration as a national agenda. She added that before analog TV broadcasts are to be scrapped, it must be made sure that 95 percent of households must have access to digital TV broadcasts.

Mr Thakorn Tanthasathit, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, said the broadcasting commission will also consider the analog broadcasting licenses of Channels 3 and 7 at the same meeting on Monday.

The two channels were exempted from license fees for the use of analog frequencies.

If NBTC scrapped Analogue television now, this is taking from the poor to give to the rich of Thailand. NBTC is not working for the Thai anymore, like the last government Peuh Thai they are working for their pocket. Like many I also did not have received the famous 600 Baht coupon. The country is not ready to go Digital only.

Yes, I can see the reason for the scrapping of the Army's Channel 5 and the Junta government's Channel 11 be to referred to the Junta cabinet. Who in NBTC in his right mind would scrap these stations right now?

Junta TV and army TV what is this place like. something similar to the most popular or only TV North Korea TV

Not in our lifetimes and they wouldn't like it anyway because, unlike analog, digital requires a strong signal.

There is no such thing as weak signal "snow" with digital - it's all or nothing. Maybe the receiver technology as improved over the last 7 years where I participated in the early part of the switchover. I even had a DVR that had both analog and digital tuners.

They should worry about items like the kids' .2% IQ drop from last year.
