Security to be boosted in South, scene of 163,00 crimes

BANGKOK: -- The deep South has seen over 163,000 criminal cases - of which some 10,000 cases were linked to national security - in the past decade, said Justice Ministry deputy permanent secretary Chanchao Chaiyanukij yesterday.

After presiding over a sub-committee meeting to boost the effectiveness of cases in the deep South, Chanchao said the meeting agreed to have public prosecutors involved in case co-ordination and bring in experienced persons to handle national security cases and work under the supervision of the Fourth Army Region chief.

They agreed that also necessary were: information links among agencies, instructions to in-the-field soldiers to adhere to the law, the implementation of additional measures to protect witnesses, and the promotion of public awareness about rights and liberties, he said.

The meeting presented the statistics of criminal cases in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla's four districts to reflect weak points and to find solutions for them.

From 2004 until this May, the region had 163,085 cases - of which 9,933 were linked to national security, he said. Such national security cases also were divided into 7,634 where culprits were not known and 2,299 cases with identified suspects - of which 1,665 cases saw suspects arrested. Police indicted 1,904 national security cases, the meeting was told. Court procedures saw sentences handed down in 278 cases.

Police investigation into the June 3 gun ambush that killed four soldiers in Yala's Raman district found that an identical AK102 gun had been used in a February 28 gun and bomb attack in the district, said Pol Colonel Nathakorn Kanchanaporn, head detective at the Southern Border Provinces Police Operations Centre.

Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Fourth Region Forward Command spokesman Pramote Phrom-in said the investigation into a series of small bomb attacks in the Nakhon Yala Municipality area from May 14-16 resulted in the apprehension of 34 suspects - eight of whom initially confessed.

The Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC) and the ISOC Fourth Region Forward Command joined forces yesterday to launch a project to promote harmony in society on the occasion of Ramadan Month. The project would provide food supplies (rice grains and sugar), house-repairing as well as health and hygiene promotion to 10 poor families in each community in the region. Hence a total of 22,500 families would be aided in this project.

I don't see the Muslim Council joining SBPAC and ISOC to promote harmony. Obviously, only loyal Buddhist government forces are interested in "harmonizing" the South, otherwise known as "subjugation."
