Sim Registration - Is there a way to tell if it has been done using just the sim/phone?

Living outside of Thailand with my wife, we are unable to travel to Thailand until this fall. So we sent her brother copies of the ID, authorization and sim's to do the registration for us.

Is there a way (e.g. *170#) that we can tell if the sim's have been successfully registered? I can currently use both sim's roaming, so I'd like to check them if possible.

Second, any possibility they may extend the July 31st date for sim registration, or has there been any method set up for people not able to return in the six month window?

Thanks in advance for helpful responses.

Thanks.

The *151# indicated my wife's card is registered, but mine is currently unregistered.

In reading some of the articles, they state the sim will be "suspended" after July 31st. Don't know if that is a translation error, or indicates it can be unsuspended once registration is completed.

Was your brother in law unable to register your SIM?

Mac

Don't know, as we haven't been able to contact him.

May be some issues, because trying to register with my wife's id, although I originally got the sim in 2007 with my passport (she does have my last name now on her ID)

Hopefully will be successful, but not critical for me as I can change the bank record to her phone - but I will unlikely be able to get the same plan I had before (allowed longer extensions of the date)

When last checking the NBTC website (in Thai only):

http://sim.nbtc.go.th/ (the "*151#" site tongue.png )

I still only find the hint, that after July 31st you can not do calls nor send SMS nor use the internet.

Only emergency calls possible.

You can continue to receive calls/SMS.

So there is no word of "immediate cancellation of the SIM card" whatsoever!

But on the other hand you can also not find whether and how long you have time to catch up with the registration.

I guess they keep that under the carpet to not motivate lazy people to wait and see.

As a matter of interest, I wonder how they plan to control the sale of SIM cards after 31st July, as there are literally thousands of outlets that sell the things?

I mean, who would buy a SIM card from a vendor knowing it isn't going to work until you register it. I would guess the majority of people would buy from where ever they have to register and save a trip..............wink.png

Login or create a login to your carrier web service. If your name and passport number are on the account you are registered if not add them.

NBTC says that there are 50000 outlets that can do the registration (with that special mobile phone app).

But there is indeed a chance that the market for SIM vendors shrinks.

I just looked at the DTAC site which says you can check using *151*9# to check status.

I had my phone stolen a while back, so in the process of getting a replacement phone and SIM, I asked them to register the number, and when I asked before leaving the official DTAC shop that the registration was also complete they told me it was. Using the above code to check status it is telling me it's not complete. Sigh/blink/think <deleted> etc...

you need to check from the phone with the SIM you are checking in the phone.

No, no extension, has been in the works for almost a year.

If you have credit in a cancelled SIM card keep the card,it can be transferred to your New Number when you buy it and register.

How, don't know one thing at a time.

How do I know, just wait till 00:01 on 31 July and find out!

Basically:

"The number 08xxx is already registered with a card (nr) ending with 3441"

"(fill up money with DTAC)" No idea what this is for EDIT: seems to stand for prepaid?

Do you happen to have a passport nr. ending with 3441 (or a Thai has registered with ID card nr. ending with 3441).

For DTAC you could try the English language response with *151*9# as written above.

Did you try?

See this DTAC site:

http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/service/sim-registration.html

So now we know what it is for, be even more happy with Happy DTAC biggrin.png

Due to the NBTC announcement, both new and current customers need to have their prepaid SIM card registered in order to identify ownership and prevent fraud from the use of mobile phone for illegal purposes while promoting safety and happiness in society and among our people.

On this site there is a youtube video in which is clearly stated that you have to appear in person, no registration by phone or any internet/social media channels.

In the forum there were repeated claims that one could do a registration online (on the provider e-service sites).

I doubt this and guess that those claims are based on some form of misunderstanding (and that it would not serve the purpose of identifiaction should be obvious).

Thanks for your post, KhunBENQ. Sorry, I didn't see the post about the "*9" version of the service command.

So I just did it and all is clear:

I think the 3441 must've come from the Thai ID card no. of the girl who bought me the phone many, many, years ago! biggrin.png

Uff! At least came close with the translation facepalm.gif

Main obstacle is reading that "flyspeck" on such a pixel display.

Agreed - I guess Thais just know the shapes of the words, but I find it very hard to get all the letters right for translation on this tiny display. Time to get a "smart" phone, I think!

If you find a pre registered sim let me know I'll buy one. I'm amazed at how so many of you blindly walk into an Orwellian life!

haha Orwellian life .. Yeah Imperialist Animal farm in Thailand rules.. I dont remember ever registering my Sim From MBK .

As long as mobile phone networks existed you could buy a SIM and use it without any registration whatsoever.

Has this changed already? (would make sense)

First hand reports please!

There was a poster recently stating that his newly purchased SIM had to be registered to his name before using.

But that was the only report I remember.

They already have that covered, you must show in person your Thai ID Card or Passport.

The Thai ID card is a marvel of technology, the registration data base categorizes by many things including ID type and number.

They have already caught some people registering for another person, it is against the law.

It might be against the law. That would make sense but at least AIS don't seem to care.

I have an AIS postpaid for myself but went to an AIS shop a few days ago to buy SIM cards for my visiting parents which I registered in my name using my ID card. At the same time I asked them to check the registration of a friend's SIM which is also in my name. I was open that the other 3 SIM's weren't for my use and they seemed fine with that.

If you're not registered, that will be the best way to find out what EXACTLY to do. Don't scared. This is sim card we're talking about. Think it over for a minute. It isn't Thailand or Thai people that are stupid. Try to use that minute to wrap your mind around the capitalist plot. Then exhale. I suspect the very idea of this sim reggie has created seveal dollars into the system. The ball of confusion.

Just an update - but was successful with brother-in-law registering. Needed to send him message after sending *161#

You get and SMS with a 6 digit number that is only valid for 24 hours, so need to be in communication with them when doing it remotely.
