KRABI: -- Three crewmen, two of them Myanmar, who went missing after their Cambodian cargo barge sank amid high waves Tuesday near Phuket were rescued on Krabi early this morning.

The two Myanmar crew members were spotted stranded near Haad Klong kong beach on Koh Lanta island of Krabi province at 6.30 am today.

Both were reported to be extremely exhausted and were immediately rushed by local authorities on the island to Koh Lanta hospital.

They told local authorities that after their cargo barge went down to the bottom of the sea after being heavily battered by high waves, all crew members jumped into the sea holding to water tanks together in one group.

They said the waves washed them to the direction of Krabi, passing Phi Phi island.

However since Phi Phi island is too far to swim to, they decided to split in two groups.

The first group drifted towards Koh Ma island, and the other clinging to water tanks headed for Koh Lanta island.

They were later make it to Lanta island, they told authorities.

Upon hearing their information, the Navy’s Third Fleet sent in rescue helicopter this morning to comb the Krabi waters looking for another group.

Meanwhile the Thai crew aboard the. Cambodian barge was rescued from the shore of Koh Lanta Yai island Wednesday night.

He was identified as Natee Klapchit, 24, a native of Prachuab Khiri Khan.

The Cambodian barge sank early Tuesday in the Andaman Sea between Racha Yai island and Phi-Phi islands.

There were 10 crew members on the sunken barge, six Indonesians and four Myanmar.

The cargo ship left Ao Makham bay in Phuket with construction materials to be sent to Racha Yai island but its engine broke down while travelling between Racha Yai island and Phi-Phi islands.

Without the engine off, the captain was unable to navigate the vessel to avoid the battering from the high waves and, finally, it capsized.
