Somyot Suthangkool

BANGKOK: -- Police investigating the shooting murder of night-entertainment tycoon Somyot Suthangkool interviewed a drug inmate at Ratchaburi's Khao Bin Prison yesterday.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt-General Sriwara Rangsipramanakul said police were checking a possible motive for the June 29 killing centred on Somyot's alleged promise to clear a lawsuit against a drug defendant in exchange for Bt18 million.

But the case still stood and Somyot reportedly did not return the full amount - only Bt6 million, he said.

Asked about the reported attempt by police to locate the gunman in Chumphon, Sriwara said that police would check on all gun-for-hire rackets and the update would be tabled when the officers investigating the case met on Monday.

The chief investigator, Maj-General Chanthep Saesawet, said the investigation had progressed by 60 per cent.

He said police were trying to prioritise Somyot's many conflicts - including a conflict over land the Rama IX Cafe was located on, a family dispute and gambling debts.

An informed source reported that Colonel Khajornkiat Sripan, superintendent of Bangkok's Expressway Police 2 Station, was yesterday summoned over why he had reportedly accessed computerised background on Somyot.

The good news is the case has just 40% to go before its complete. I never cease to be amazed at the skills of these sleuths in pinpointing with such accuracy the exact amount of knowing what they don't know.

Hope they manage to hold on to any evidence they happen to find.

Is it just me or do these cops sound like they are bit players in a James Cagney movie?

From the OP: "Asked about the reported attempt by police to locate the gunman in Chumphon, Sriwara said that police would check on all gun-for-hire rackets and the update would be tabled when the officers investigating the case met on Monday."

So the police are aware of gun for hire rackets, and they only check in with them when a rich person is killed?

They maintain lists of gunmen for hire and check/update them whenever an election is held. Or used to.
