Pattaya, military move to demolish Cozy Beach encroachers

PATTAYA:--Pattaya officials and soldiers began demolishing a string of illegal bars and bungalows on Cozy Beach for encroaching on public land and illegally pruning trees.

Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjawattana and soldiers from the 14th Military Circle in Chonburi raided the area July 1 in an effort to bring order to the 1-kilometer beach off Kasetsin Road at the foot of Pratamnak Hill.

Officials found 18 vendors set up along the winding staircase used to access the beach, some of whom said they’ve been doing business there under umbrellas for 30 years. Speedboats were moored wherever they liked and, at the base of the foothill, small wooden buildings and shacks had been erected over a span of 100 meters of public property.

The operation on Cozy Beach is only the latest move by Thailand’s military government against encroachment on public land. From Phuket to Phi Phi, Hua Hin to Pattaya, military troops have come in - or forced local officials to act - against makeshift structures, beach umbrellas, jet skis and other private enterprises illegally profiting from public land.

In Pattaya, the military told Pattaya to bring order to its beaches and reorganize beach umbrella operations under the implied threat that if local officials didn’t act, the army would.

Cozy Beach, tucked away near a five-star resort and with minimal access, had escaped the long arm of the law until now.

Coy beach is the beach that is closed at night with a gate but where people coming by boat have sex orgies ?

Coy Beach?

Anyway, you don't need a boat nor do you need to bypass a gate. You can walk down there. Russians take a few bottles with them to enjoy the beach at night. Nothing wrong with that, as long as they clean up after themselves.

BTW what ever became of the order against that new condo near Royal Cliff etc that exceeds legal height limits? Is that coming down? Along with ALL the businesses on beach side of walking street.... big fish only eat small fish, don't go after big sharks

I follow with keen interest the beach reclamations everywhere. In Phuket and in and Pattaya's

Walking Street in particular as I understand the entire south side of Walking Street is in violation

and by law should be torn down. I doubt it will happen but I am interested in seeing the dance of

law vs money/corruption. coffee1.gif

some of whom said they’ve been doing business there under umbrellas for 30 years

Been there illegally 30 years and now something gets done. They probably have actually been told to move quite a few times in those 30 years but come back because they know that the corrupt and lazy officials will turn a blind eye to it and actually encourage it so that they can be 'fined' and told to move again at a later date. A few weeks ago vendors on the footpath and road from Tukcom to 2nd Road were all moved. Yesterday they were back and the public has again to fight its way along the narrow width dodging umbrellas, awnings and other obstructions.

Breaking the law seems to be this countries "National Pastime"
