Students sued for demanding charter change

YANGON – University students face charges from Pabedan Township police for staging an illegal gathering when they demanded changes to the Constitution.

An All Burma Federation of Student Unions member Paing Phyo Min and other students protested in front of Theingyizay market, Yangon, on June 30.

Paing Phyo Min was detained as he marched towards Yangon University to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of July 7, 1962, army crackdown at the campus.

After the commemorative ceremony, Zeyar Lwin, another student union leader, was also detained by police and taken to Insein Prison.

Paing Phyo Min was released on bail.

“The leaders of the student protests are facing a lawsuit under Section 18. We haven’t announced their names,” said an unidentified Pabedan police officer.

Seems to be a lot of parallels between Myanmar and Thai millitary on the use of junta-inspired law to suppress freedom of expression.

Maybe the two countries should merge their constitutions in the interest of the ASEAN Community.
