Cpu Is Running Hot

I have a AMD Athlon 64 2800 CPU with a Chaintech VNF3 MB. It is running around 63-67deg C under load and I am trying to cool it down. I have been told that certain thermal compounds such as Artic silver between the heat sink and CPU will make a big difference. Is there any truth to this? What is the best stuff to use? Any idea where to get it, especially in the Pattaya area. I tried a quick search of tutcom with no real success.

I have added an extra case fan but didn't seem to make much difference.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Arctic Silver is considered the best and can make a significant difference in heat transfer over the generic stuff, there are reviews/benchmarks that show the differences (google). Would like to know where to buy it also. One option is to replace the standard heatsink/fan with a better one such as seen at Jedicool

Arctic Silver is the best one. difficult to find and expensive!! The cost for 2 gr. is around THB 400.00 (360 + 7% VAT) if I ordered and del. in 3 days.

If someone need, I'll order it. Send me PM

Arctic Silver

Just how much are you expecting to reduce your temps by? While Arctic Silver is a very good product l would be surprised if it could reduce your temps more than 3 or 4 degrees tops.

Is your computer in an air conditioned room? If not then your temps under load while not great are not so terrible either especially if you are running a high end video card. Try taking off the side of the case and running a small fan aimed at the CPU to see how much you can lower your temps. At idle my computer is now running at 44c, the ambient room temp is 35c. Under load it gets as high as 57c. While 44c at idle sounds a bit high, if l was in Europe and the ambient temp was only 20c then 29c (plus 9c again) would sound okay to me.

Have you cleaned out all the dust build up inside your case recently? Is it in a cool well ventilated space? Some cases are better ventilated than others, some fans are more efficient than others, you need to check out some of the websites that specialise in cooling to help you decide the best fans and where best to place them. A quality cpu fan, a quality heat sink, a 120cm exhaust fan and maybe an intake fan at the front of the case might be more use than simply using artic silver. Oh, and don't forget to take a look at your cabling. If it's all over the place then tidy it up for better airflow, some cable ties and some rounded cables for connecting your drives to your motherboard can go a long way.

Arctic Silver has cool down my P4 3.2 with Zalman Fan 9 C!! On an AMD Dual 3800 with AMD Fan 7 C!!

Anyway, the burning temp for an AMD is much higher than for an INTEL. For an AMD Sempron CPU the burn temp is 90 C and for an AMD Dual Core 3800 the normal working temp is between 49 - 65 C while burning is above 85 C. But for an Intel even 3-4 C plays a big role!

Although a good thermal paste will help, it won't help *that* much, say, compared to generic paste. If you've got something like a thermal pad, changing it to artic will probably help a bit more.

You also need to check whether your own case is suitably cooled. Remember that the CPU fan only circulates air around itself, and that air will remain there unless your case has adequate circulation. Circulation means that cool outside is constantly being drawn in, goes through the majority of the case, and then is drawn out, at a good rate. Your typical e-cheapo case usually only has a single fan for this purpose, the one located in the power supply, and that of course is not enough.

And of course, the CPU heatsink itself can make a big difference.

If you really want artic silver paste, you can find it at the specialty overclocking stores at Pantip and IT Mall. I personally don't use it.

Just in the moment there is not any shop in the Pantip who have "real" Arctic Silver" PASTE, all of them looks like but isn't! 2 weeks ago I was looking for it and find only "copy" paste!! If you know the real, you directly know the difference. One of my supplier, he produce heatsinks for liquid cooling, is the only one I know who have it and as post before, the cost is high: THB 360 + 7% VAT. Same staff cost in Germany more than 15 Euro as I was getting to know!!

I agree for the casual, non-overclocking user standard paste will generally be sufficient. Sometimes more important then the paste itself is how it is applied. In this case more is not better.

Here is one review on pastes/compounds: The Tech Zone

After hours and hours of asking around Panthip, I finally found Arctic Silver (320 baht) on the 4th fl directly above Data IT. It's a corner shop (sorry forgot the name), and they sell cooling accessories.

On the ground floor towards the left hand side corner, there is a shop which sells Cooler Master and Thermaltake products. They too have thermal compounds similar to Artic Silver. 350 baht per tube

Hi Tuffy

63 to 67c is way too hot! is that under full gaming load with every extra graphics turned on get yourself an artic cooler freezer 64 pro heat sink and fan unit

in UK they are £18 inc vat and are absolutely brill even have a cool and quiet function my second machine is similar to yours and the fan runs for 5 secs every 20 on the quietest mode in standby which i personally dont trust and have it running all the time very very quiet

trouble is now i can hera the hdd spinning around and the dvd turning

fan speed 300>2200 rpm 40 cubic feet per minute 6 year guarantee

one bad point very heavy 528grms!

so dont go chucking your pc about too quickly if you are having a shift around

cannot rate this cooler high enough

check out the pcformat magazines reviews

it's good for all athlons up to 5000+ plus the 64 FX cpu's too

hope this helps

check out this review http://www.pureoverclock.com/article26.html

comes with paste too use the tiniest amount about half a pea and spread it evenly over the cooler's heat transfer base use a stanley knife blade or a speader like a credit card type size

Have fun

Thanks Jing-Jo, I found this site in BKK i that carries the Arctic cooling freezer 64 pro and am going to give it a try. Hopefully i will see some results with this thing.

Thanks again.

Thank for the recommendations Jing-Jo. My computer is now running cooler than it did when I lived in Alaska!!!

With the new case fan set up and the new arctic cooler I have dropped 20 deg C From 72C to 52C)under full load running prime95!!! and 10 deg under normal operation. Now it runs at 49 deg instead of 60-65.

Thanks again!
