as many posters here hate Thailand.

Sad but true

I think it is important not confuse 'critical appreciation' with 'hatred', just as it is also important not to confuse 'uncritical adulation' with 'appreciation'.

There is no compulsion to leave one's powers of critical thought at the immigration, much as some would like to force that upon us.

How about we just call a spade a spade

OK I understand that Donz, and I also apreciate people's genuine love of Thailand (or anywhere else for that matter).

But here's at thing. All the people I know who have come to really hate Thailand (and I know a few) started off with an uncritical, adulation of the place and then proceded to walk 'eyes wide open' into problems that had they been a little more realistic and critical in their aproach to life in Thailand, they might very well have avoided.

Whereas people I know who really have a grasp of Thailand and have lived sucessfully in Thailand for many years (and I know a few of those too) all have a very rounded view of the place and maintain their critical view of things about Thailand that are often well short of ideal, or even reasonable.

Well if your not careful and get burnt and keep getting burnt im sure you will hate it. The trick is you have to not go into things so blindly and minimise your chances of getting burnt.

I read that alot of farang/foreigners go into relationships and marry without even knowing much about her family, culture etc and get a raw deal. They seem to think with there other head instead of the one on there shoulders. They wouldnt do that in there own country but seem to go head over heals and just not think.

You cant really change the negatives much, you just need to be aware and live a great life.

I mean whats the point in being down all the time cursing this and that, most are probelms you cant fix anyway

i try to FIX problems anywhere i am. so you are saying i have to fall in love with my girlfriends family? why do you differentiate between the foreigner not "knowing" the culture, and the thai not knowing "my" culture. since marriage is about "love", i would think this responsibility would be shared by the parties involved. unless there be a ulterior motive. or do you justbelieve that thais are not afforded that opportunity generally?

Well... actually, Donz is assuming in his post that ALL foreigners are male. So, I will have to disagree with his reply. It puts a whole new slant on "getting burnt" if you think about living in LOS on gender terms.... :o I've been "burnt" but not by relationships. Life in Thailand extends far beyond farang men and Thai women. :D I'm still here though and life is getting betterer and betterer! :D

I never said you have to love her family, but you should know them before you EVER get married for obvious reasons.

If you going to live in Thailand you should learn there culture, would be nice if she learns yours too but you learning there is a must.

Since when has 'culture' got o do with 'love'.

You don't have to fall in love with her family but you have to like them and they you. I thought that was human nature.

Why should they learn 'my culture' and all the ignorance and misrepresentation and bullshite that comes with it.

We all ahve to live together and we all should try to learn from each other.

I live here, so I try to learn about them.

I know some of my culture, the good points I keep the rest I don't care for.
