BANGKOK: -- MEDALS of honour were awarded posthumously to two soldiers killed in the violence-plagued deep South yesterday by Fourth Army chief General Prakarn Chonlayut.

Sergeant Prasit Nakarareung and Private Yusob Tehlee of the Narathiwat 30th Special Task Force were killed on Thursday. The general provided financial assistance to their families at the victims' funeral bathing rites.

The pair were shot dead in Rusoh district in Narathiwat and set on fire inside their pickup truck. They had returned to an outpost at around 11am after completing an errand when gunmen ambushed them in tambon Batong. Police said yesterday that Yusob and Prasit were victims of the insurgency. They are still questioning eyewitnesses.

No arrests have been made yet.

Violence has plagued the far South on an almost daily basis since early 2004, claiming up to 6,300 lives so far. The insurgents are believed to be seeking greater autonomy for the three Muslim-majority provinces bordering Malaysia.

The majority of casualties have been civilians, with both Buddhists and Muslims falling victim to insurgents who target security forces, citizens and perceived representatives of state authority such as teachers.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's government has vowed to reboot a stalled peace process with several rebel groups, but so far there has been little progress.

Yesterday, Muslims in the South joined millions around the world in marking Eid al-Fitr, which signifies the end of Ramadan, offering prayers for ancestors and donating money to those less well off.

Honouring these guys, and providing financial assistance is great. But the Generals need to get a grip of some basics to stop these needless casualties.

Any bets on whether that pick up made the same journey, at the same time, using the same route, every day?

Training, and simple basic practices, driven by effective leadership, would save lives!

But will it?

Will the next 3 provinces then seek greater autonomy and the cycle continues to spread North?

Call the area what it is - A War Zone, and treat it appropriately.

For such a supposed powerful Thai Armed Forces, they don't seem to be able to deal with this issue particularly well.

Diplomacy has failed. It's time to get serious or this will only get worse.
