Sok Bun

Phnom Penh Municipal Court - A team of police officers escorted business tycoon Sok Bun to Municipal Court Saturday morning, immediately after his arrival by plane from Singapore.

He arrived at the court at 9:30 am, where he answered questions regarding his vicious assault on July 2 on the former television star known to fans as Ms. Sasa.

An arrest warrant was issued for Mr. Bun on Thursday and he was placed on Interpol's wanted list, after Prime Minister Hun Sen and other high-ranking Cambodian politicians blasted the courts for failing to bring Mr. Bun to justice. The case has ignited outrage on social media, where people criticized Cambodia's law enforcement for allowing the rich and powerful to abuse women with impunity.

Ms. Sasa appeared in court Friday. Her lawyer Put Theavy told Khmer Times that he is grateful for the court's quick action in arresting Bun and forcing him to stand trial.

Property tycoon Sok Bun accused of rape
Sat, 18 July 2015

A former TV hostess savagely beaten by property mogul Sok Bun after intervening to stop his unwanted advances on her friend appeared in court yesterday as it emerged the friend has now filed a rape complaint against the tycoon for a previous alleged assault.

In a closed two-hour hearing at Phnom Penh Municipal Court, former CTN hostess Ek Socheata, better known as Ms Sasa, answered questions for investigative judge Leang Samnath about the July 2 attack.

Samnath declined to go into details about the hearing; however, Socheata’s lawyer Put Theavy said the day’s questions revolved around her connection with Bun, her Japanese friend and the circumstances of the night.

Cambodian tycoon Sok Bun charged over SaSa assault

SaSa posted images of her injuries on social media and took part in several interviews
A Cambodian property tycoon accused of assaulting a well-known actress has appeared in court after she posted a video of the attack online.

CCTV footage emerged earlier this month of an assault on the actress Ek Socheata, better known as SaSa, at a restaurant in the capital Phnom Penh.

Sok Bun, 37, returned to Cambodia from Singapore, where he had fled.
Violence against women is commonplace in Cambodia but public exposure of this attack has sparked outrage.

After his arrest at Phnom Penh's airport, Sok Bun faces charges of violence and intentionally causing injury.
On Thursday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen called for Sok Bun's arrest.

"Don't think that because you have money you can escape,'' Hun Sen said. "What you have done is intolerable."
At one point, the CCTV footage shows the assault and Sok Bun's bodyguard (circled in red) pointing a gun
The footage shows SaSa being dragged off a chair and on to the floor at a Japanese restaurant.

She is then kicked in the head, and when she tries to get up, she is punched and stamped on over the course of a minute.
At one point, a bodyguard draws a gun and points it at her head as the attack continues. It ends when a restaurant worker pulls the attacker away.
SaSa then obtained the video from the restaurant and posted it on her Facebook page. She has since given several interviews on national television and was still visibly badly bruised.

Earlier in the week, Sok Bun pleaded for forgiveness but a social media campaign called for his arrest.
SaSa says she was trying to protect a friend from Sok Bun's advances
"He pulled my hair and smashed my head against the floor," she told the Associated Press (AP) news agency. "I was in shock, I couldn't believe what was happening."

SaSa says she was protecting a friend from the advances of Mr Bun, who was at one point the head of Cambodia's estate agents' association.
Yin Sophy, Sok Bun's lawyer, was quoted in the Phnom Penh Post as saying his client had been keen to return to Cambodia to see the case resolved.

"My client has a real willingness to deal and take responsibility about this case," he said. "So he has come to solve these allegations with court directly."
If found guilty, Sok Bun could face up to five years in prison.

The newspaper reports that the bodyguard has been charged with attempted murder and remains at large. SaSa says he pulled the trigger of his gun only for it to fail to discharge.

Sok Bun arrested at airport
Sat, 18 July 2015

Brigadier General Sok Khemarin, chief of the Ministry of Interior’s penal police department, said the okhna, formerly head of the Cambodian Valuers and Estate Agents Association, was arrested on arrival at about 8am this morning before being sent to Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

“He was arrested based on the municipal court’s warrant for his arrest by Ministry of Interior penal police this morning,” Khemarin told reporters. “He was arrested after he returned from traveling abroad.”

If this would have happened in Thailand hands up those who believe the guy would have been forced to stand trial. No......no one??

You clearly weren't around Thailand 30 years or so ago when this sort of thing used to happen with impunity. It doesn't much now, thanks partly to video cams in phones, Facebook, etc., but also a growing public backlash. The main difference is that Sok Bun was able to return home after a few days, presumably thanks to an agreement that he won't be doing serious prison time. In Thailand it would have taken at least a few months. That's progress, of a sort. Spend some time in Cambodia and you just may realize how far Thailand has come in the past few decades.

Yes, extremely far. Just see the way swift justice was meted out to the Red Bull heir, etc, etc.

Cambodia tycoon arrested amid outrage over attack of actress

SOPHENG CHEANG, Associated Press

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — A Cambodian real estate magnate whose violent assault of a female TV star was captured on video was arrested Saturday, authorities said, in a case that has sparked national outrage.

Sok Bun was charged with intent to commit violence and will be held at a Phnom Penh prison pending trial, said Gen. Sok Khemrin, chief of the Interior Ministry's penal division. The charge carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.

The July 2 attack against actress and former TV host Ek Socheata, better known as Sasa, has prompted a national conversation about justice in the Southeast Asian country, where the wealthy often act with impunity and buy their way out of trouble.

Sok Bun, 37, left the country after the video began circulating on the Internet last week. Police had said they believed he fled to Singapore, and Interpol issued a Red Notice, which is the equivalent of an international arrest warrant.

He returned to Cambodia on Saturday, two days after Prime Minister Hun Sen called the attack "intolerable" and ordered him to return home and turn himself in.

Sok Bun was met by police Saturday morning at Phnom Penh International Airport and escorted to the Municipal Court, where he was questioned for several hours before being charged. He was then driven to a prison on the capital's outskirts, said Sok Khemrin.

Sok Bun is seen in the video repeatedly punching and kicking Sasa in the head in an assault that lasts about a minute, as his bodyguard points a pistol at the actress' head.

Sasa, 28, has said she was protecting a friend from the drunken advances of Sok Bun, when he flew into a violent rage. The attack occurred at a Japanese restaurant in Phnom Penh and was captured by the restaurant's security cameras — and then obtained by Sasa, who posted the video online.

Sok Bun issued statements last week through his lawyer to say he "deeply regrets what happened." He offered to pay Sasa $100,000 in compensation, which she declined, saying she wants to see him in court.

Let us hope this tiny man gets to spend some time in prison, where he can be treated to some "dates" with his inmates. My guess is they would love to meet him. Maybe he can show them his fighting skills. There is never a justification for a man beating up a woman. Only losers and some middle eastern men do this, where it is more or less condoned by a very weak state. Let this punk suffer. And let us hope the security thug who pulled the gun serves time too. That thug is the very definition of a sycophant. Talk about a group of losers. My guess is Disgusting Donald would do this too, if he thought he could get away with it.

Police search for Bun guard
Mon, 20 July 2015

After the arrest of wanted tycoon Sok Bun this weekend, authorities are now searching for his bodyguard, police said yesterday, though a lawyer for the woman Bun was charged with assaulting has accused the disgraced real estate magnate of obscuring the man’s identity.

Bun was picked up by authorities after flying into Phnom Penh International Airport on Saturday morning.

An arrest warrant had been issued after he was charged with committing intentional violence with aggravated circumstances, a charge stemming from an incident caught on security camera in which he viciously assaulted former TV presenter Ek Socheata, better known as Ms Sasa.
