Junta Says Yingluck Free to Attend Brother's Birthday Abroad

BANGKOK — Thailand's ruling military junta has dismissed claims that former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has been barred from attending the birthday of her brother Thaksin Shinawatra, another former PM who is currently living in a self-imposed exile to avoid a corruption conviction.

Many supporters of Yingluck, known as the Redshirts, have been posting on social media that Yingluck and other Pheu Thai Party politicians have been banned from leaving the country for Thaksin’s birthday celebration. In spite of his exile, Thaksin, who will turn 66 on 26 July, remains extremely influential among the Redshirts and his political dynasty in Thailand.

Speaking to reporters today, the deputy sec-gen of the military junta, which toppled Yingluck's government last May, dismissed the claims that the former PM has been banned from traveling abroad.

According to Gen. Chatchalerm Chalermsuk, Yingluck is free to leave the country as long as her request is approved by the court; she is currently facing a lawsuit in supreme court over alleged corruption in her government's rice subsidy program.

"I haven't heard anyone in the NCPO talk about this," Gen. Chatchalerm said today, using an acronym for the junta’s formal title, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)."Is this a deliberate spreading of a rumor?"

He continued, "The court ordered [Yingluck] not to leave the country. It's not an NCPO order. As for leaders and members of Pheu Thai Party, they aren't being prohibited from leaving the country by the court. They can go abroad as usual by requesting permissions from the NCPO."

The NCPO stated some time ago that, once Yingluck's issues were under court jurisdiction, the NCPO would leave it to court discretion as to whether or not to allow her to leave the country. This the NCPO has just reiterated. That some people (including some red shirts) believe that the NCPO, the courts and most government agencies are all the same thing is a separate issue.

The thought of Thaksin celebrating yet another birthday abroad gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. I hope all his remaining birthdays require that his "friends" have to leave Thailand to celebrate with him. As for Yingluck, she was always missing when her duties as P M called, so no difference to anyone if she leaves to be with the puppet master. Good riddance to bad rubbish to both of them.

Why would she not come back yegads it seems 99% certain that she walks freely from any court or they would have locked her up long ago.

On condition she buys a one way ticket.

Most likely it is not that the red shirts have any knowledge of a ban. This is their way of preparing the people into thinking YL should be allowed to go and if not then it is the Junta that has banned her. Getting the public worked up before a request is even made to use as pressure with the courts to grant her permission. ONLY!!!

Have a huge party. Let them all leave. Then cancel there passports and sieze eveything they own....

All the Redshite mouth pieces have been "spitting the dummy", yet haven't seen or heard anything from Yingluck herself as being banned from attending "puppeteer's" birthday bash or even seeking permission to attend.

Sound like Redshite leaders whinging for no good reason, as Gen. Chatchalerm Chalermsuk, stated"...Yingluck is free to leave the country as long as her request is approved by the court"

Same applies for Redshites & Pheu Thai, need approval from NCPO. Simple.

Why cannot they report correctly. He is not in self-imposed exile to avoid a corruption conviction, he is there to avoid gong to prison for two years after he was convicted. Get it right

So a misleading headline by technicality. The NCPO doesn't care (ah-huh), only the court cares.

On one note Ms Yingluck never introduced section 44 rule so that is in the former Prime Ministers favour and what's the point of banning anyone from seeing Thaksin , all this is just window dressing , unless the Junta is there for the long term, every citizen of Thailand after the Junta leaves ( Late 2017 ) can travel anywhere they like and one hopes talk to whoever they like, that's called Democracy.

Plus, he was not convicted for corruption, those numerous cases have not yet been heard because he fled.

He was convicted on a different and serious charge, abuse of authority.
