Rising Thai star Sophie Indracusin, who spent years growing up in Phuket, will join the teen road-safety campaign.

PHUKET: -- Thai celebrity singer and actor Chinawut-Stéphane Indracusin, better known to his adoring fans simply as “Chin”, and his rising star sister Sophie will lead the launch of a road-safety campaign aimed at saving the lives of teenagers across Phuket.

Chin and Sophie both lived in Phuket for years in their youth, and both have fond memories of the island. They have since left and grown up in Bangkok, where their successful music and acting careers have developed.

Chin is a talented and well known GMM performing artist in Thailand with five albums, including “Chin Up” and “Maybe I am Bad”, which were on top of the Thai charts for weeks. He starred in the successful Thai movie Thongsuk 13 and has also starred in several TV series.

Sophie, just 17 years old, is a popular Channel 7 actress. She stars in several TV series, with leading roles in two. She is currently shooting Chantana Sarmcha, a TV Series to be released at the end of the year.

The road-safety project, simply called the Teen Road Safety Campaign, will get rolling at Phuket Technical College on Yaowarat Rd in Phuket Town on Monday (July 27), where students will undergo road-safety training in the classroom, then get the chance to take their newly learned skills on the road for practical application.

On successful completion of the course (see programme below), participants will receive autographed helmets and a certificate of completion signed by the Head of Academics at the Department of Transport and the Head of the Traffic Police.

“Research shows that young drivers, either on motorbikes or cars are at the most risk of causing or being in a road accident, and too many of these accidents are fatal from avoidable practices,” said Barrie Buck, Managing Director of Siam Guardian Services.

“Knowledge, training and information are always the best ways to improve – and that is why SGS Training Centre has pooled resources with several other organisations, including government, non-profit organisations and the private sector to provide teens with a comprehensive safety campaign.

“The resources pooled will provide teenagers and young adults the opportunity to learn road safety in carefully designed, fun road-safety workshops,” he said.

FREE MOTORBIKE CHECKS

The event on Monday will also feature an area where rear light checks on motorbikes will be done by trained mechanics and light bulbs will be replaced for free, provided by the Phuket Community Foundation and Siam Guardian Services.

“Phuket locals are encouraged to come along to have their lights checked and replaced for night safety. This has been an island-wide community project that has been running for nine years through the Phuket Community Foundation,” explained Cindy Ratcliffe, Phuket Community Foundation Manager.

“Through the project, different locations have been selected around the island where the motorbike light bulbs have been changed and valuable safety information have been offered to locals in the more remote areas on the island.”

VIDEO CONTEST

The event on Monday will also mark the launch of a new, and hopefully to become an annual teen safety video competition, where students are invited to produce and submit 30 to 60 second safety videos that they feel will encourage safer drivers on the roads.

The producers of the three best videos will be awarded with cash incentives from an invited sponsor of the campaign. The panel of judges will announce the top three videos at the end of August. The competition is open to all teenagers in Phuket, and the video content is to be in Thai.

SUPPORT

Supporters of this campaign so far include the Phuket Traffic Police Department, The Head of Academics of the Phuket Transport Department, the Phuket Public Health Department, Class Act Media, SGS Training Centre, The Phuket Community Foundation. Phuket Online Marketing have also agreed to support the campaign and will be providing the social media support required for the Teen Video Competition.
