The flipped BMW has sparked an islandwide boost in safety measures at all roadworks sites across the island

PHUKET: A BMW Z4 that exited the Darasamuth Underpass on the bypass road last Saturday only to flip into a roadside drain under construction has inspired an island-wide safety boost at all roadworks sites in Phuket.

Samak Lueduanghad, Director of the Highways Department Phuket office, announced the order for ramped-up warnings at all roadworks sites yesterday (July 24).

“Signs to warn motorists must be installed one kilometre, 500 metres and 300m before each roadworks site,” he said. “All safety equipment, such as barricades and lights must be in place and ready to use before construction starts.”

Mr Samak explained that order follows an investigation into the crash of the BMW in front of Phuket International Hospital on July 18.

“Before the accident, our officials inspected the area and confirmed that all required safety equipment was in place. However, some of it may not have been functioning at the time of the accident,” Mr Samak said.

“After the accident, we ordered the construction company to install more warning lights, but Vichit police later informed us that some of the lights were not working properly and some did not come on at all.”

In December last year, 7-year-old Molly Anne Bailey died after the pickup truck she was travelling in crashed into a huge hole in Srisoonthorn, in central Phuket, that had not been marked with effective warnings.
In March, her parents voiced their anger over the lack of preventative action taken by Srisoonthorn Municipality.

As recently as late April, a Chinese man was injured in Patong after driving his car into a ditch at the side of the road which has been made to install new drains

This is a bad report bu the Puket News. They did not report on the condition of the driver. Just left it up in the air

This is not a complete story Bad journalism

So not a high so person with a lot of influence have an accident and safety measures are finally taken.

Should this be the normal procedure for all road works in Thailand ?

A Thai driving a powerful car, is like a weapon.... Stay clear at all times.....

Not paying attention had nothing to do with it? Not the fault of the driver? But because of an unlit sign (in the daytime) near road works that have been ongoing for over a year.

I wonder if action would have been taken if it was an old Nissan pickup carrying fruit...

Funny how more expensive cars have the luxury of their number plates being obscured.

This article just demonstrates how much money and inequality rules the roost here.

After living/ working in Thailand for 10 years, I do not give a ffffff-art what new Thai laws, regulations, guide lines or recommendations are in print or announced. Well they be enforced? (not long term) Now I see the advantage of living in a country where you can sue an individual, business or city hall for negligence.

gross ineptitude strikes again when will these people learn accidents happen through a lack of coordination someone should have insured that safety measures were in place ,

..Thank You Trotskey..[emoji572]️

Safety and Thailand are opposite ends of the universe

Safety equipment was in place but NOT FUNCTIONING.

Neatly sums up Thailand's road safety record.

More like a moving time bomb

What would be inspiring if they actually completed the works along with the other section nearby where the black pigs hang out.
