BANGKOK: -- English version of all laws related to human trafficking will be made available soon so that foreign governments and international organizations will understand the efforts already undertaken by the Thai government in addressing this problem, said Mr Pornpetch Wichitcholachai, president of the National Legislative Assembly, on Monday.

He admitted that the NLA was weak in publicity campaign despite the fact that several laws and regulations had been enacted to deal with human trafficking problem. A full report about the NLA’s performance in this aspect will be made available, he said.

For instances, he said that illegal migrant workers are now entitled to minimum wage rate of 300 baht per day plus 700 baht social security and other social welfare services.

As for migrant workers working in fishing industry, the NLA president said that fishing-related laws had been updated with higher penalties being introduced against the use of forced labour and underaged labour in the industry.

He stressed that the government had committed to cracking down on illegal fishing and the use of forced labour in fishing industry.

The NLA, he said, has commissioned the translation of all the new laws and regulations pertaining to human trafficking into English so that foreign governments and international organizations will understand what has been done by Thailand to deal with the problem.

"all the new laws and regulations pertaining to human trafficking into English so that foreign governments and international organizations will understand what has been done by Thailand to deal with the problem."

So no foreign government has the capability to read Thai - especially those countries having embassies in Thailand?

Maybe the Junta should realistically examine what its anti-human trafficking accomplishments really have been.
