Shot
I think Phuket will be fine for you. You'll fit in well in the Rawai/Kata area. Kamala, Bang Tao probably not so good.

mrfaroukh
This is something you self should experience. Stay couple of month is Bangkok and then Phukket and find out for yourself where you are more happy. I choose Pattaya because it is small city go everywhere on bike easily. Many expats from all over the world and my country too. Have many friends enjoying together playing Petong, go to gym, movie , restaurant together. I found Bangkok to large. Not easily moving around. Hate the traffic. It is more expensive to live. Not easy to make group of friends doing things together. Phukket was nice, beautiful but for me it was boring as didn't find many friends. I love to be together with friends and do things together. You may like it lonely. And that is the reason I advise you to check it out for yourself. elgordo38
thank you very much ozz1 i basically want to train and get accepted unlike in my country people in bangkok maybe are more tolerant because there are more turists-farangs? Do yourself a favor skip both and come to Chiang Mai cheaper cooler more user friendly. Lots of young ladies window shopping here. I just had a young lady this afternoon take me by the arm and help me across the street she was about 17 a smile from ear to ear. Made my old ticker go pitter patter but alas my 26 year old g/f was watching. she lets me look but I cannot touch. There are lots of foreigners here and the ladies what more can I say its a buffette a bevy of beauties as far as the horizon. My advice is just be fair don't be a trifler single out one pretty little lady for all your attention. As much as you hear about gold digging ladies here there also is an element of old farts that think they are in a ice cream store. They soon get tired of chocolate and start looking for vanilla. If your a user your a looser.

OnTheRun
10 or so years ago I would have said Phuket every time. After 6 years in Phuket I became very disillusioned with the place, namely the aggressive attitude of a certain section of Thais. I returned for a short break earlier this year (after a 4 year absence) and TBH it's a lot worse than when I left. Traffic seemed to be a constant nightmare, even the ( what was a quiet) scenic road between Kamala - Patong - Karon - Kata is constantly nose to tail with traffic. That's before I even mention the Chow Fa (sp?) road past Tesco Lotus on the outskirts of Phuket town down to Chalong and Rawai. It all really boils down to what you want, if you don't mind the madness of Bangkok I'd go there, you can always escape for weekend breaks. If you want a quiet island style life try another island as Phuket certainly isn't that nowadays. A shame really as it was fantastic in the earl 00's. Altalake
Bangkok is really just another big Oriental city. Very polluted, and traffic is awful. Phuket is a big island (same-ish size as Singapore) and has clean air. Quite a lot of fun expats, bridge clubs, good (if costly) golf, diving, horseback riding - you'll find lots to do. The restaurants and bars are good too - mind you, they pretty well are in many of the towns in Thailand. If you are looking for girls, there are plenty there too. Patong is the place for that, but the Thais themselves do not usually like it as a town. A lot of the advice you get on these posts is good and sensible, but you must try for yourself. Kata might indeed be a good place to start.

RedQualia
I personally wouldn't be able to stand living in a metropolis such as Bangkok, but to each their own. That said, as another recommended, stay a few months in each place. But also try to visit a few other places around Thailand. I've heard good things about Krabi, for example, and used to like Khao Lak quite a bit way back when. But there are also other places... Loei, Udon Thani, Koh Chang, Rayong, Hua Hin, maybe Surat Thani, to name but a few. Lots of places that might be on your list, should you visit them and spend time there. Just a thought... Before you get too settled in either of the places you mention.
rhodie
Bangkok has much more to offer. But, come over and try both. Only you can choose. Good luck!

Pinot
If you like Russians, Phuket is the place for you, .. If not, ..go to Bangkok, What are you talking about? There are some Russians but nothing like Pattaya. There aren't very many Russians. Chinese tourists mostly this time of year. The OP should bypass Bangkok and come to Phuket. If you don't need to be there, no reason to live there.
