NAN, 7 August 2015 (NNT) - ASEAN Studies Center of Bandon (Srisermkasikorn) School in the northern province of Nan, held "ASEAN Day 2015" to celebrate the 48th anniversary of the establishment of the regional bloc.

According to www.asean.org, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 when Thailand and four other founding fathers of the bloc, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore, signed the ASEAN Declaration called Bangkok Declaration, in the Thai capital of Bangkok.

The Bangkok Declaration was aimed at accelerating the economic growth as well as social and cultural development through the regional cooperation.

After that five other Southeast Asian nations joined the bloc, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN.

The event in Nan was presided over by chief of Nan's Elementary Education Office with participation of more than a thousand teachers and students from twenty one schools.

Main objectives of the event were to raise awareness of the upcoming ASEAN Community Integration among the participating teachers and students and put them into readiness for the arrival of the new trade liberalization zone of the world.

The event featured several exhibitions and competitions of traditional foods, national costumes, folk games and performances from the ten member countries. There was also an ASEAN song show by students. These activities would help the participants understand culture and traditions, particularly languages of the member countries.

ASEAN steps up its response to fight against narcotic drugs

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has played an active role in tackling drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking since it was established. Its latest effort to eradicate narcotic drugs was the ASEAN+3 Workshop on Drug Monitoring Network of the ASEAN Narcotics Cooperation Center (ASEAN-NARCO) held from 22 - 24 June 2015 in Bangkok with participation from all ten member countries and dialogue partners.

Led by the Thai Office of the Narcotics Control Board, the workshop had the objective to establish a center of drug monitoring in ASEAN. During the workshop, representatives of the member countries, dialogue partners and anti-drug international organizations shared experience and knowledge on drug monitoring. The workshop participants also created a work plan for the implementation of the second-phase of a three-phase development plan for illicit drug eradication.

The first phase of the development plan is to search for cooperation in ASEAN to establish anti-drug networks and database. The second phase is the strengthening of such cooperation and appointment of personnel to coordinate the anti-drug networks. The second phase also seeks to promote continuity and sustainability of the development plan. The third phase is the development of a database of the ASEAN anti-drug networks and a channel of communication between them.

ASEAN-NARCO has expressed confidence that ASEAN’s readiness in terms of anti-drug information will greatly benefit ASEAN in its investigation, prosecution and eradication of illicit drugs. The information will also benefit ASEAN’s future efforts to combat and monitor drugs in the sub-region.

Military court hands down 30 years jailterm on lese majeste offender

283647-imagejpeg-442958-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A Kanchanaburi-based tour company’s agent was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment on charges of lese majeste and computer law violations by the military court.

The defendant, 48-year old Mr Pongsak Sriboonpeng, was arrested by police on December 30 last year after he posted messages deemed to be offending the Monarchy in his Facebook page, named Sam Parr, four times in September, 2013 and twice in November last year.

Accompanied by his lawyer, Mr Pongsak was taken to the military court on Friday and the court read out the lese majeste and computer crime charges against him. Mr Pongsak pleaded guilty to the charges and was given 10-year jailterm for each of the six counts of offence totaling 60 years.

But because of his confession, the court halved the sentence to 30 years.

Prior to the court’s delivering of the verdict, the defendant’s lawyer asked for permission for the court to allow observers to witness the trial but it was rejected by the court claiming that the case was related to security.
