Mae Sot is open for Visa Runs...

Recommended Posts

I have an old post I did last month with all the info, check it out.

You posted about it a month ago, then posted excerpt today (why ?) but including the link would have been too much effort ?

I intend to cross over to Burma via Mae Sot to activate the second entry on my Tourist Visa on 25th August. Can I take it that I will not be asked for proof of onward travel? At the expiry of the second entry I will go overland to Vientiane to obtain Non-Imm visa this time for retirement, hopefully.

Also, will I need to show cash? I read before you need to show USD 20,000 as proof of funds for the duration of your trip.

You will not be asked for a ticket out.

I have seen no reports of Mai Sot asking to see the 20k baht. But my advise is to always be prepared to show it if asked.

So you can reenter in the same day on visa exemption no problem?

Not at Mai Sot. As far as I know they do not allow border crossings for visa exempt entries. It has even been reported that they have a sign up that states that.

At other crossings you can just do a border hop and come right back (other than Sadao).

I do believe this is the case. They used to allow this some time ago but I think they've stopped it now, probably because of the huge influx of Burmese daily. Mae Sot is not really the place to chance it.

I have a multi entry Non O and did this border crossing last month. No hassle, friendly staff on both sides of the crossing. 30-35 mins max to leave Thailand and re-enter. Only 500 baht on the Myanmar side for their visa stamped in and out at the same time in the office. None of this full page stamp nonsense, just two little stamps. Easiest crossing I have encountered so far in 10 years living here.

Did the visa run Friday, no problems at all.

Second entry on my double tourist visa. Stamped out at kiosk no. 9 and crossed the bridge. On the Burma side directed to the foreign arrivals office where a polite gentleman took my passport and 500 baht and gave me a plastic card receipt.

Spent a few hours in Myawaddy shopping and had lunch at the River View restaurant. The food was good and the view across the Moie River interesting and scenic.

Once I had finished went back to the same office where the gentleman had stamped my passport in and out and he released it on presentation of the card.

Back over the bridge to kiosk no.12 and received my two month extension stamp.

All in all a pleasant day and no hassles. Just as it should be. Both Burma and Thailand benefit from my cash. And the rain laid off for one day too so I was fortunate.
