Yes, I agree the ones I've seen are about that size too, and were more of a chocolate brown, vice the light brown color depicted in the drawing. They looked like an over-size ferret with a long tail.

You know, upon further investigation, perhaps your sighting was of a Malayan weasel. Check out this wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayan_weasel Its range is much closer to your location. Also, it states the size of the Malayan weasel is "a body length of 12–14 inches (30–36 cm) and a tail length of 9.4–10.2 inches (24–26 cm)."

Seastallion...

Otters have a more blunt shaped nose/snout viewed from the front...sideways they may look "pointy" but that's not the case.

What you say about the gait reminds me of both the otter, weasel, binturong & especially the civet. Perhaps it was

the common Asian Palm Civet, which do not necessarily live in palm trees and have no aversion to living in & around

humans...an easy source of food scraps.

Down in my patch, Ranong, we have a good many of them and a few even enter the house at night looking for treats.

They're kinda like an Asian version of a racoon and civets can also be easily tamed & make good pets.

Then there's the story of Coffee Luwak...coffee made from the coffee beans which the civet eats and passes out

as civet poop. Aparently it's rather tastey & very expensive.

Here's a couple Asian Palm Civet pix for your reference....

I saw one of these the other evening when riding through the jungle just on dusk. But it had a red fur similar to a fox. Civet?

I have been studying civets & binturongs in SEA for years off & on and I have never seen

a red (rust coloured) civet but that doesn't mean they don't exist or have been discovered.

Perhaps what you saw was a mongoose, also common out here and yes...they can be "red".

Yeah...could be. I was looking from my 2nd storey balcony, and it was across the soi, about 5 metres, so quite an acute angle from above.

Your photo shows quite a bushy tail...my memory is of a thinnish tail...the creature looked sleek.

I am dubious about it being an otter (despite being confident before) simply because of the lack of running water. The swamp is large, but fairly dryish.

I had been casually observing a feral cat hunting around when the creature turned up...the cat scarpered. It was decidedly bigger than the cat.

Searching more images....I came across the giant red squirrel. Maybe?

Anyway...I've just mentioned cha mot (palm civet) to the neighbours and they think it is much more likely that that is what I saw.

Cheers.

Of course. Just downed the last one for the night and was on the balcony having my last ciggie.

... are you sure that you didn't smoke the bathroom's carpet instead of a ciggie? tongue.png

It was probably brought to Hatyai as a pet originally, and when they lost interest they just let it go...

It could be one of many species. I have a new bottle of JD if you need a real drink....That sewage water will get you in the end mate....biggrin.png
