geovalin
Chhay Channyda Immigration authorities yesterday deported 52 people found living illegally in Cambodia, bringing the total number of people booted out of the Kingdom since the government began a census of foreigners last July to nearly 3,000. As with yesterday’s deportees, most of the people caught during the General Department of Immigration’s ongoing raids have been Vietnamese working in the country without passports or on expired visas. Uk Hai Seila, investigations head at the Ministry of Interior’s Immigration Department, said yesterday that 48 Vietnamese workers had been sent across the border at Bavet. He said three other people – Bangladeshi, Dutch and Nigerian nationals – were flown out of the country, while a Thai national was deported through Poipet. read more: http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/fifty-two-foreigners-booted-out

MyFriend You
And again, Nigerian can't miss !! By the way : Nigeria is announced as the fastest developing country in Africa; Main economical power ! Does this illegals bring new ideas also to Asia ?? Only one Nigerian?? There are dozens upon dozens of West African scammers in PPenh and Sik-Ville.............as well as all the other Nationalities - I know one Aussie that arrived in 1997, been there ever since - says he is overstay about 12 years without any questions. They pck on the Vietnamese because they are easy, very rarely hassle the other Foreigners.
Sheryl
I think the government is trying to gain popularity by being seen as cracking down on illegal VN immigrants. For years their failure to do so and general coziness with/concessions to VN was a source of leverage for their political opposition. It was necessitated by their then dependence on VN military backing. All that has now changed with China's prominence in the country and they don't need VN support anymore. Not only does it have propoganda value for the ruling party, moves against VN -- even such token things as deportation of individuals -- also wins them points with China as the two countries are again on the outs. Tomtomtom69
Very good analysis Sheryl. Although I might add illegal Chinese workers have also been a problem and have been deported. But I know that Vietnamese have been deported in significant numbers recently.
Tomtomtom69
Why would anyone overstay in Cambodia especially that Aussie guy when for less than us $300 per year you can get a 1-year multiple entry visa extension extendable at infinitum. Sheryl
In the case of the VN of course they were likely here without visa or passport. But agree re the Bangladeshi, Dutch and Nigerian...hard to fathom why they didn't just extend their visas as they must have had them.
