Hi everyone,

Someone I know would like to come and teach English in Thailand. I know more or less everything that they will need to get a non B visa, but my question is: They have an diploma, but not a degree. Will they except a diploma? Does anyone have any experience? And my next question would be: If they do not except diplomas, what options do they have?

Thx

The non-B visa will not be a problem, provided he has found a job and can submit paperwork from the empoyer. But having no degree means he will not get a teacher license, limiting his job options mostly to language schools. That mostly means jobs from 16:00 till 20:00 on weekdays and in the weekends.

When I first came I only had a Management Diploma and it was no problem. They wanted some form of Tertiary education. Now, it may have changed but if you're applying for a job before you come the school/ language institute may be able to help. Good Luck.

Unfortunately, he can get a job as a "teacher" in a public school. Not really certain how its done but we have far too many unqualified people with marginal work ethic at my school.

Hopefully, requiring clearance from UK now will clean out some of the rabble.

$&%$*#@ there are some &*%&$# teachers in this country.

If your friend is so desperate to not only teach at a mall, but as a primary job, well good luck lol. Instructors there never last long. Cost of running around up to Lao every 90 days new job new visa. You'll end up losing money month on month. Usually departures from these schools also end badly.

Agencies not much better.

Thanks everyone.

Another question: I was on a non-B visa before and had a work permit, but my visa, etc. has changed and I don't work in school environment anymore so I don't know much about the process anymore. When I did work at a school, I didn't have a teacher's license, only a work permit. Was that because it was a crappy public school?

I know about the crack downs recently, and I don't want to say to someone "Sure, come over to Thailand" and then they have to struggle.

Must have been some years ago. For working at an elementary or secondary school you now need a teacher licence, or a temporary waiver. For the waiver you need to have at least a degree.

Both immigration and labour office often check this and you cannot work legally without at least a waiver. If you do not have a degree it wil basically mean working at language schools or working illegally.
