Chiang Mai tourism not expected to noticeably suffer from Ratchaprasong attack

BANGKOK, 19 August 2015 (NNT) – The fatal blast near Ratchaprasong Intersection in Bangkok is not expected to have significant effects on tourism in Chiang Mai although the same cannot be said for tourism in general, according to Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association president Pornchai Jitnavasathien (พรชัย จิตรนวเสถียร).

According to Mr. Pornchai, although the incident would inevitably affect tourism, no effects have yet been detected in Chiang Mai. Hotels still have 70-80% booking rate for the Chinese national day holiday period in early October.

He added that the tourism industry had survived Thailand's political crises, which had more severe effects on tourism. Therefore, he believes the tourism scene in Chiang Mai would not be substantially afflicted by the Ratchaprasong incident.

Meanwhile, security patrols have been increased in Pattaya City in Chonburi to ensure safety for tourists and to foster public and tourist confidence.

In Bangkok, the Yaowarat Chinatown area also received a similar security boost. At the same time, the Airports of Thailand has raised the security level at all of its airports to level 3, the highest level.

So less than 2 days after the bombing we can announce tourism in CM is unaffected by the bombing. Thai govt. really in damage control mode and going out of their way to prove that this won't affect anything in Thailand at all. Business as usual then? Move along nothing to see here

Agree Starky ... Amazing that they are already counting the money in the pocket instead of waiting to see if some more is gonna happen (which I think will). If another "incident" happen then Thai Tourism is gonna take a serious blow and dont tell me that the perps dont know that ....

Often people react with emotion and emotion is generally highest after an incident like this. The fact people are not already starting canceling and changing their trips for October is a good sign. As this attack seems almost certain an attack to hurt tourism this is a very relevant press release as will be the others that follow. You would have to be living in a different reality if you think they should either come out with statements indicating the terrorist(s) accomplished their mission or in fact not say anything and just let the rumors fly and present a picture that the terrorist(s) won and can dictate the Thai economy. Absolutely nothing wrong, and in fact the proper response, to remind people there is much more to Thailand than Bangkok.

This is what happens when tourism is almost everything.

Which is why they need to get rid of all this visa headaches...

if American, 10 years for $10. We saved them from the Japanese and Germans!!!

and no more 90-day check-in nonsense....

tourists, expats, it's time to unite!!!

i predict there will be a new tourist in CM tomorrow....to see the tigers and elephants and not think...

those people get blacklisted....

It is possible that the bombers may want to demonstrate that no place is safe.

Could be Pattaya, Chiang Mai, or softer, quieter areas. I would think they would avoid islands (Koh Samui/Koh Chang).

My thoughts are the skytrain, shopping malls. Shopping malls are really vulnerable, as almost everyone is toting a shopping bag, and there are so many entry options. Ferry's would be kind of easy, if they were to load explosives in the trunk of a car and just leave it there (exit the ferry before it departs).

Trains...well...I suppose any bus or train that hauls cargo and passengers are easy prey.

Best idea now is just to wait and see what happens this week... We just carry on as usual, with the exception of going to large shopping malls ...just for a while. We do not utilize public transportation anyways.

I think you may be living in a very different reality if you could confidently state in less than 48 hours what effect this bombing may have on tourism

You really need to be being obtuse. As the OP states this will have an impact on tourism. This can be seen right now in Bangkok and the lack of folks out at normal tourist spots including malls, The other part of the original post stated nothing confidently but offered an opinion, using logic, that the incident wouldn't have much of an effect on tourism in Chiang Mai.
