HAT YAI: -- A Malaysian tourist died and her two friends injured when their car was rammed by a speeding cold-storage truck on Phetkasem highway in Hat Yai early Wednesday morning.

Kuan Lang station police officer Pol Lt Chamlong Kongsawat was alerted of the incident at about 4 am today between a Malaysian registered car and Thai cold-storage truck at Kuanlang intersection.

Died inside the Proton sedan KDV 251 I was a Malaysian woman seated on the front seat beside the driver. The driver and another on the back seat seriously injured.

Tong Sia Sieng Tueng Foundation rescue workers rushed to the scene and helped to take the injured tourists out of the badly damaged car. They were admitted to Hat Yai hospital.

The dead Malaysian woman and her seriously injured girl friends were not yet identified.

Truck driver Surapong Konglao, 37, claimed the Malaysian car came into his direction in speed in the middle of the intersection which at the time the signal lights were blinking yellow on all sides.

He could not put the brake in time and crashed into the sedan.

He said he was driving frozen seafood from Ranong to deliver to customers in Hat Yai.

He was booked for reckless driving that caused death to others.

No doubt released later with 2,000B fine and "dont do it again" - these killers on the roads here are a cancer to this country and there is no consequence for them when they kill someone ... Disgusting

It's a classic situation for an accident; flashing amber lights, denoting caution, are completely ignored, as are stop signs.

Stop signs actually seem to work the other way around, people ignore them and the through traffic slow down and give way.

There really does need to be an education campaign.

Flashing your headlights does not give you right of way to turn in front of straight-through traffic.

Sounding your horn as you speed through a stop sign does not guarantee you won't get killed.

Stop signs mean you stop, look, and go if there is no through traffic. If the through traffic is turning, that does not nullify the stop sign and you still have to give way.

Perhaps most of all; Are you really really in such a rush? Doing a dangerous over-take just to get in front is not really necessary.
