Malls told to install more and better CCTVs

BANGKOK: -- Shopping malls have been asked by the police to install more “look-up” high definition surveillance cameras in and around their premises as a precaution against criminal suspects.

Pol Lt-Gen Prawuth Thavornsiri, the spokesman of the Royal National Police Office, said Sunday that most criminal elements often avoided looking up when committing offences in shopping malls to protect themselves from being identified because they knew they were being watched by above-head surveillance cameras.

He suggested shopping malls to install surveillance cameras at eye level so that they could detect the faces of the suspects. He stressed that the cameras should be of higher quality for shaper images.

Pol Lt-Gen Prawuth, also the assistant police chief, presided over the launch of police patrol at tourists destinations in Bangkok on Sunday which include Suan Chatuchak, shopping malls and the Grand Palace.

Regarding the Ratchaprasong bombing incident, he said that the case was progressing well but he could not elaborate on the case.

He also clarified that all the VDO clips or images shown in the social media claiming to be suspected bomber or their conspirators were not posed by the police.

Nothing short of airport level advanced security could stop anyone from blowing up a busy or crowded mall or restaurant

I went into esplanade with gf to a restaurant last night and there were probably hundreds of people there

She was carrying a big shopping bag and I had a padded motorbike jacket so we could both have been trying to blow it up and we were not searched or given anymore attention than anyone not carrying anything

The Malls and the rest of us tell the police to instal better quality CCTV cam at better angles so next time they might identify terrorist and bombers.

Great timing on this.

Could it be their twisted way of playing CYA?

It is not working.

Shouldn't the headlines read "malls told to install more cameras because they won't have graft like the gov does when buying things needed." Or maybe " malls told to install more cameras because the police can't afford them."?

Well said.

Pattaya......."but rather than pay for new cameras to be installed, the better solution would be to fix and properly maintain the cameras the city already has. About 1,260 of the 1,400 installed cameras in the city are broken, he said.

He noted there currently is no budget for repair work."

Thainess - pass the blame, do not accept any responsibility.

Just a minor thought but wouldn't cameras placed at eye level be more prone to vandalism etc unless expensive security features employed to protect them ?

Extra expense makes everyone hesitate.

Installing better equipments should help but the people who are handling the issues need to be more organized and improved in order for them to make a quick action to get the job done.

You can install anything. ZERO maintenance though it's as useless as tits on a boar hog.

Fix the old cameras sounds like a great idea.... But depending on how old they are and what quality they were back then... It maybe a waste of time.

If most of the allocated budget was stolen and cheaper spec cameras were used it might not be worth the expense of fixing them all now

Camera tech moves very fast, we would really need an expert to decide whether the current spec is "good enough" or do it properly with modern equipment like high qhd resolution 360degree cameras that even work at night etc but I doubt they would take advice from any real expert

My way of thinking is that the cameras in the malls are for the use of the mall, not necesarily the police. Of course police may want to see what is recorded if a mall has made a complaint, but then it would be the mall's problem if the video was useless.

My point is, how can the police TELL the malls to install better CCTV??

I know, lets make everyone use special passports to get into mall and some of those camera's they use at immigration to get a photo of every person entering and leaving. They could also mandate every visitor to Thailand have an RFID chip inserted into the right hand.. More CCTV is definitely needed, I mean, there is more CCTV in Bangkok than the whole of SE Asia, but it's clearly not enough....we demand more....because more police state is the only thing that will "keep us safe"...Thank the old gods and the new for surveillance, we couldn't possibly be free without it could we?clap2.gif

It is a truism that in preventing an attack like this authorities must be correct every time.

For conducting an attack like this one needs be right only once.

This is valid in high threat protection and equally for terrorist attacks.

No Budget! well thats a shame and great news for would be criminals.

So could they not spend the billions of BHT saved when they cancelled the Chinese submarine contract!!!

Its up to this amature lot who have lost a lot of face to fix this CCTV problem, most malls have plenty of dosh so they should be legally required to install not asked to upgrade immediately, you could probably buy better cameras at Panthip Plaza.

Come on RTP get out there fix your cameras up instead of loosing more international face.

High quality cams may help identify bag snatchers, shop lifters and other petty criminals, but it won't help catch bombers. People planting bombs know where the cameras are and take precautions. i.e. hats, wigs, sunglasses etc. The other type of bombers, the suicide type, don't care.
