heyo,

just about to head south to the islands but not sure where to go. I know i want to be in koh phan yang about 5 days before the full moon party to get accomodation, so i have a week to go somewhere before i head there on oct. 2 or so. I've heard good things about both koh samui and koh phi phi....and also bad things about both... so not sure, but price is also an issue... is either much more expensive than the other?

if someone could help twould be cool...

I went both place Samui and K.Phi Phi.(before and after tsunami )

(about samui , you can find cheap places for staying also )

Anyway nowdays , It's hard for finding a place to on K.PP due to Tsunami(many hotel are under constuction) ..if you don't plan it well and booking the bangalow in advance..you will miss all (except you go there as one day trip)

You trend to go to K.Pha ngan already ..maybe you 'd stay somedays at K.Samui ..

K. Samui is the 3rd biggest island TH ..you may rent a motorbike and seeing around or living in different beach every 2-3 days (or goto Koh Tao ,Koh Nang Yuan)

Samui is the better choice. Phi Phi is on the west coast and you have to travel a long time to get there. Samui is a really beautiful island with a lot to see and a lot to do.

i think Phi Phi has more to see and is alot nicer, but Samui has a better night life.

I think Samui is the better island, has plenty to do and plenty to see and you are a very near to where you eventually need to end up, enjoy your trip.

Samui is a larger island and has more of a spread out price range, but is also more developed. Probably easier to live cheaply there, all things considered. Then again the range of activities and the opportunity to splurge out will be greater too, depends on your self-discipline really.

As for tourist crowds, Samui seems to attract more Brits while Phi Phi has more Scandinavians. But you will find lots of nationalities on both.

I don't think you can go wrong with which ever choice you make. Phi Phi is awesome. It's a short and relatively inexpensive flight from Bangkok to Phuket and just a short day trip from your hotel! I can't speak for Samui. The best advice I can give you regardless of which choice you make is to purchase things like sun screen, etc. in Bangkok before you go. They'll price gouge you once you get to the beach if you don't.
