Can anyone tell me what the bamboo stackable Chinese-style steamers are called in Thai?

LANG THUENG (ลังถึง) only seems to refer to the metal stackable steamers, although I could be wrong.

Not a complete answer, but เข่งติ่มซำไม้ไผ่ (KET DIM SAM MAI FAI), literally basket-dim sum-bamboo wood. However, it would appear this only applies to the steamers for dim sum. What is the name for the larger bamboo steamers used for cooking whole fish? It's not going to be the same.

Thank you for your reply. It appears that these Chinese bamboo steamers, which are often used overseas are not used extensively in Thailand. I hear that Thai cooks mainly use metal ones, which surprised me.

Unfortunately I don't know the name for the larger bamboo steamers used for cooking whole fish. I think I will use your word and not look any further.

Thank you for those links. Actually, I thought that I hadn't seen this type of steamer when I read your previous post, but now that I see it, I realise that it was in a photo of a fish which I downloaded a while ago (probably mackerel).

Those steamers are somewhat similar to the Chinese ones. I don't know whether I can download any of those photos. Do you think a photo of a standard Chinese steamer would do, or would they be too different?

The two most popular type of steamers seem to be the ones for mackerel (เข่งปลาทู) and the ones for dimsum (เข่งติ่มซำ). Bamboo steamers in general are referred to as 'bamboo steamers' (เข่งไม้ไผ่).

If you google 'เข่ง' and then click on images, you'll get a good idea of the variety of เข่ง out there.

Bamboo steamers in general are referred to as 'bamboo steamers' (เข่งไม้ไผ่).

เข่งไม้ไผ่ simply means bamboo basket. It doesn't specifically refer to steamers.

(To be precise, according to the RID เข่ง only refers to woven baskets.)

Thank you for that.

I have removed the word 'steamer' from KHENG TIM SAM MAI PHAI and KHENG TIM SAM.

KHENG was described as a basket for fish. When looking at the images, some plastic baskets came up, so I assume that even though they are plastic, the design places them in the 'woven' category as well.

Huh? According to the RID:

เข่ง น. ภาชนะสานอย่างหนึ่งมีรูปและขนาดต่าง ๆ เช่น เข่งลําไย เข่งปลาทู;

KHENG (n.) A type of woven container having various shapes sizes, for example KHAENG LAMYAI (a fruit, longan), KHAENG PLATU;

It can definitely contain things other than fish.
