PHUKET: -- Governor Nisit Jansomwong joined the chief of all provincial electricity authority offices in the country yesterday (August 24) in officially launching two underwater power cables now providing mains supply to two islands off Phuket.

At the ceremony, Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) Governor Sermsakul Klaikaew explained that the project cost B112 million.

“One power transmission cable extends 1,181 metres from Laem Hin on Phuket to Koh Maphrao island. The other runs for 3,040m from the boat pier of Ao Po bay to Nakha Yai island,” Mr Sremsakul said.

Both cables are capable to delivering 33kV of power supply to the islands, he added.

The PEA began supplying electricity to Nakha Yai island on May 23 and Koh Maphrao island on July 24 as a pre-launch trial, Mr Sermsakul explained.

“We invested in this project so that local villagers on the islands can have uninterrupted power supply from the mainland,” he said.

“This will of course reduce the power-supply problems local residents faced before, and reduce the volume of diesel used to fuel their generators.”
