A sand shark swam round me when I was swimming off Patong beach 3 years ago. I was very surprised but not really very scared. It was about one and a half meters long.

Oh yes no shark attackes Junta or bombs will slow tourist form coming.................suspect the Thais will now go stupid shark hunting killing everything they see, about their mentality

Dunno what bit this lady. But about eight or nine years ago I talked to a lady who lives above Laem singh beach who said she witnessed a shark attack on a small boy which resulted in death. The beach was not closed and the incident never reported in the press. Sure, OK, hearsay but I was compelled to researched sharks in local waters only to find that there are five or six species that are relatively common and have been known to be aggressive toward human beings. Never heard of a shark attack in these waters other than that one story.

Is anyone flying around in a helicopter warning tourists not to drink 2 or 3 large bottles of beer and then going swimming?

Is anyone flying around in a helicopter warning tourists to be careful they are not killed or injured by a jetski, parasail rope or boat propellor?

Is anyone flying around in a helicopter warning tourists about the fecal coliform count at Patong and other west coast beaches?

Maybe when Thailand get their subs, they can send them out on "shark patrol" as well.

This year because of the el nino the situation for marine life is different,on the east coast of Australia large areas of coast are closed off for surfers(and swimmers) because of a spate of recent shark attacks and the many shark sightings.The water temperature is apparently 2 degrees Celsius warmer than normal.

Some years ago in Acapulco there was an invasion of sharks because of a similar weather phenomenon,before that shark attacks there had also been unheard of.

Not affected is a bunch of B.S.. Thailand is under the worlds micro scope. Every little killing, mugging or shark attack rumors hurt Thailand. The Thai press advisors are like the weatherman because there is only a chance that they are telling the truth!

There is typically not much seasonal variation in sea surface temperatures in shallow tropical waters, usually no more than a few degrees Celsius (an interesting animation of SST variation in the Indian Ocean over the last 12 months can be seen at http://www7320.nrlssc.navy.mil/GLBhycom1-12/navo/indiansst_nowcast_anim365d.gif).

That said, it only takes a relatively small fluctuation from normal extremes to upset marine dwellers (especially if it continues for an extended period).

A classic indicator of this is coral bleaching (a relatively rare event) - and, surprise, surprise, the following link reports on a coral bleaching event in the Indian Ocean earlier this year (see http://www.cbsnews.com/news/indian-ocean-reefs-hit-by-coral-bleaching/). There was also a warning of bleaching conditions issued for Vietnam (http://coralreefwatch.noaa.gov/satellite/analyses_guidance/global_bleaching_update_20150602.php)

So, it's reasonable to assume that some unusual climate event has occurred in waters around Thailand this year. How or if this has affected marine critters (other than corals) in the region is open to debate (as this forum shows).
