Edu-Visa Overstay

Featured Replies

Hi all, I am approaching the end of my first year of studying Thai and my final extension of my ED-Visa will expire on 24 September, however I mixed up my dates and booked a flight out of the country for 29 September. I am aware there will be a 500 baht fine for ever day past the 24th, but is there anything more serious than that to be concerned about? I would rather pay the fine than change the flight date as the former actually works out cheaper. Anyway, I just ask as although I don't mind paying the fine, I don't want to be detained or anything like that. Any advice would be much appreciated and hopefully put my mind at rest. Cheers, Steve

Rather to go onto an overstay you could apply for a 7 day extension, pay 1900 baht and be given 7 days to leave the country.

You should follow Ubonjoe's suggestion and get a 7 day extension.

Overtsyaing is not allowed although if you arrive at the airport with an overstay they will let you leave once you've paid the 500 baht/day fine. It's a straightforward process and won't affect you coming back.

However, if you are caught on an overstay in the days before you leave you will be arrested, fined and deported at your own cost. You'd be detained at the International Detention Centre (IDC) where you will remain until shortly before you're due to fly at which time you'd be escorted to the airport.

Thanks fellas. Can I go any time before it expires, or do I have to go on the actual day it expires? Sorry to be a pest!

You can go a few days before you permit to stay ends to apply for the extension.

Yes you can go before your extension expires. It's not a good idea to leave it to the last day. Even if you go early the 7 days will be granted from the date your current ED extension expires so nothing is lost.
