Thai Beng

Featured Replies

According to the other newspaper, there's an ethnic group in Thailand called the Thai Beng. Reportedly they speak Thai, but always end their sentences with the word beng or deng. Does anyone know any more about them and their background? Google, in this case, is not my friend. Thai script for the group's name would be a good starting point. Thanks.

The proffered explanation of the name had me checking the calendar!

There listed in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dai_people under the spelling ไทเบง, though the more usual name seems to be ไทมาว 'Tai Mao'. They're one of the groups known as 'Chinese Shan'.
