Two brought in over alleged Angkor scam of a Brit tourist

Featured Replies

Siem Reap province

Provincial police in Siem Reap are looking into allegations that two men working at the Angkor Wat temple complex scammed a tourist after he partook in an incense-lighting ritual and received fake cash as change when trying to make a donation.

Siem Reap police official Hout Southy said a British tourist angrily posted about the incident on social media after he allegedly tried to donate $10 at a Buddhist shrine.

He only had a $20, so he asked for change, but later discovered that he’d been given a fake greenback.

“He didn’t really look at the change, and afterward he tried to use the money to buy water but was informed that his money was fake, since it had the word ‘copy’ [written across it],” he said.

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Wow $10 scam. In Thailand, there must be hundreds of $10, or much more, scams perpetrated every second.

angrily posted about the incident on social media

The bane of every South-East Asian police force.

And the local culture of lie and cheat and scam for self-advantage at every turn.

Maybe they did not know the 10 dollars they gave back was fake? Maybe it was given to them by another tourist. Hardly worthy to be in the news.

Did you read the OP?

There seems to be con artist everywhere lately, said Siem Reap police official Hout Southy after pocketing his two $3 & $4 note change.........coffee1.gif

If I received fake money with "copy" stamped on it, I wouldn't be bragging about it on social media.
