Anybody familiar with the costs of a working permit and visa for Burmese people? I got information that the costs were 16.000 Baht, which seems quite high to me.

The 16,000 baht number sounds like it includes agent/legal fees.

The fee for a one year work permit is 3000 baht.

A non-b visa from an embassy or consulate costs 2000 baht for a single entry visa and a multiple entry 5000 baht.

If a person is working and has a work permit they can apply for a one year extension of stay (it is not a visa) at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht.

Are these agent/legal fees "necessary"?

My friend told me other people paid a similar amount of money, maybe sometimes "only" 14.000 Baht.

I'm not an expert regarding this subject, but I guess these Burmese people are quite vulnerable and are only willing to pay this high price because they really need to. Or not?

"She who must be obeyed" recently applied for a work permit for one of her staff and in total it cost approximately 5,000 baht, including permit, visa, health check etc etc.

Do you mean it's possible that an employer (in this case your wife?) can apply for a work permit in which case one gets the official fee?

Individuals, both Thai and foreigners are able to employ Burmese, lao and cambodian nationals under the migrant labour scheme.

Individuals must first apply for a 'quota' from labour office in the district they are living in before making the application.

From memory, no. If there is a fee, it is nominal.

As said the all in offical fee from go to woe is about 5000 odd baht.

I found out that many Burmese people have to pay more than the official fee, if not they have to do the process by themselves, which will cost much more time with chances they'll encounter problems. They wouldn't pay such a high fee (16.000 Baht) if only strictly necessary. For them this fee is very high, having much less money to spend than the average foreigner.

I've done the process myself twice for our nanny. Took about 1.5 days of my time but only paid the official fee. Next time I'm paying the broker. So yes it will be 10k plus 5k official fees. Worth it in my book.

Under the migrant worker scheme, the actual cost of a One Year Work permit is currently 1,000 THB.

As has already been pointed out, there are other fees one incurs in this process including:

Cost of 2 year Non immigrant LA Visa/Temporary Passport,

Medical Check/Hospital Card.

Any registration of change of employer.

Annual Worker Quota.

Working outside of Amphoe certificate.

Agent fees.

Etc.

Fees have recently dropped substantially due in part, I suspect, to 'military oversight'.

Starting from zero, 10-15k for the whole process, start to finish seems about right.

Currently it costs us about 6,500 THB per Burmese Worker, including Agent's' Fees, for Change of Employer/1 year WP/Hospital Card/Health Check/Provincial Work Area Permit, we already have quotas.

HI

I am desperately looking for advise on what the process is from start and how to go about it as our nanny needs to come from Yangon . She has her passport and National ID in Myanmar . Could you pls help me with your experience ?

there is a MOU, memo of understanding, on laborers between TH, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia

Google and read it

It works with quota's as suggested, but in a private case it can work different, the labor office in your district will know the ins and outs

It is less costly than the normal foreigner procedure and can be arranged in 2-3 working days
