Chiang Mai has a Chinese Consulate. You can download the application forms from the internet. The consulate takes a few days to process the visas.

Costs vary according to which country you're from.

The OP was asking about obtaining a Thia visa from the Thai Embassy in China !

I have obtained TVs at the Thai Consulate-General in Shanghai whilst on a Chinese TV. Unless that has changed in the past two or three years, I believe it's still possible. I cannot speak for Beijing, but since it is the main diplomatic mission, perhaps call them direct to find out?

Two or 3 years is a long time. A resident visa is shown as a requirement on all the websites for the embassy and consulates in China.

There is only one embassy but their are 8 consulates. See: http://www.thaiembassy.org/main/

You will not get a tourist visa in China unless you are a legal resident there.

Rubbish you can..

From the Shanghai consulate website: http://www.thaishanghai.com/th/visa/tourist_visa/

"Tourist visa for Chinese citizens (from all areas) applying individually

and for foreign nationals with residence permit in Shanghai,

Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui "

You can check the embassy and the other consulates websites it you want to. Just click the link button on the website I posted a link to before.

Ubonjoe is perfectly correct.

The Embassy and consulates in China will only issue Visas for Thailand if you have a residency permit for China.

For foreigners Please note that the Royal Thai Embassy will only accept visa application from individual(s) with residency permit in china, providing that the residency permit remains valid after completing the trip to Thailand.

I came to Thailand in July 2011 and lived in Xiamen for nearly 2 years with legit residency and when I went to the Thai consulate in Xiamen I was told categorically "no visa required, you UK person, you go 30 day exempt" and that was it she closed the shutter and walked away hehehee. Evidently the TV is mainly for Chinese nationals and they can't be bothered with any other passport holders.

Maybe try Kunming.

I got a tourist visa for Thailand there 4 years ago. OK, so I was on a Chinese student visa back then, but when I went 2 years ago to help a Sri Lankan friend obtain one, nowhere did it state one had to be a Chinese resident. Sri Lankans definitely would have to be, because he was turned around 2 times before his application was accepted on the third day. Then again that's because Sri Lankans need visas to travel pretty much anywhere. Even to get a tourist visa for Laos is impossible in Thailand for Sri Lankans, unless they live in Thailand so tourist visa applicants are out. Even then, the purchase of a tourist package of some sort, with confirmed flights in/out is required. For Laos. Imagine that. Of course, only for a small number of nationalities.

But westerners shouldn't be given much trouble in China. However, I don't have any more recent reports.

Just remember though, Chinese are not allowed to apply for a Thai visa anywhere other than mainland China. So perhaps that's one of the reasons for the rule, if in fact it is applied nationwide now.

Can't say for sure though, it might be best calling up the individual consulates to ask. I can also imagine that the consulates are more easy going than the Beijing embassy.

I would like to note that my Sri Lankan friend was a Chinese resident. But that wasn't even the issue in his case. Proof of flights in/out, getting proof from his university he was studying there and then getting proof from ALL the universities he had studied at throughout his time in China were required.

A westerner would not have been subject to this kind of scrutiny.

All depends on your nationality.

In general, Afghanistan, China, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Iraq, Iran, Cameroon and a few others mainly in west Africa are on Thailand's "axis of evil" when it comes to visa matters.

Generally speaking, citizens of these countries can only get their visas in their home countries.

That's true many foreigners don't need a Visa for a 30 day entry.

You have to reside in China for 2 years to get a residency permit for foreigners, so I doubt you had the correct documents to get a Visa from a Chinese Embassy/Consulate. I've spent a lot of time in China and have many friends living there.
