A bit of a google reveals

Pome

Claim: "Pommy" (or "pom"), a slang term for a British person, comes from the acronym POHM, which was used to designate a "Prisoner of His Majesty."

Status: False.

Origins: "Pommy" (or "pom" or "pommie") is a primarily Australian (and largely derisive) slang term used to indicate a recent immigrant from Great Britain, or a Brit in general. The origins of "pommy" having been lost in the mists of time, someone needed to cook up an etymology for it, preferably one equal to the pejorative sense of the word. Accordingly, we now have the story that criminals transported to Australia were designated "Prisoners of His Majesty" or "Prisoners of Mother England" (some versions claim the convicts bore one of these legends printed on the backs of their shirts), and thus the acronym "POHM" or "POME" eventually evolved into the slang term "pom" or "pommy."

This amusing anecdote is doubtful as anything more than a fanciful invention, as acronymic origins antedating the mid-twentieth century are automatically suspect, and the use of "pommy" has been recorded at least as far back as 1915. Moreover, nobody has yet turned up corroborating evidence that "Prisoner of His Majesty" or "Prisoners of Mother England" were actually common designations for criminals transported to Australia. The best guess at this time is that "pommy" was based on the word "pomegranate" -- either because the redness of the fruit supposedly matched the typically florid British complexion, or because (like "Johnny Grant") it was used as rhyming slang for "immigrant."

Pommy

The term Pommy for a British person is commonly used in Australian English and New Zealand English, and is often shortened to Pom. The origin of this term is not confirmed and there are several persistent false etymologies.

One theory is that, as the majority of early immigrants to Australia were British, it is rhyming slang for "immigrant" from a contraction of the word "pomegranate", or possibly more directly related to the appearance of the fruit, as it bears a more than passing resemblance to the typical pale complexioned Briton's skin after his or her first few days living under the hot Australian sun.

Another theory is that POM is a shortened acronym of Prisoner of His/Her Majesty (POHM). As many of Australia's first settlers were convicts, sentenced to transportation, this theory holds that upon arrival in the country they would be given a uniform with POHM emblazoned on the back, and that convicts with an extended stay on Australian soil would no longer have to wear the shirt and would often refer to newer entrants into the country as "Pohmmys". Other suggestions hold that POM is a different acronym, such as "Prisoner of Mother England" or "Port of Melbourne". These etymologies are believed to be false, as the term "pommy" was coined long before acronyms were used in common parlance. Moreover, there is no record of prisoners in Australia ever wearing such uniforms.

Another etymology suggests it is short for "pompous" [citation needed], a quality often attributed by Australians to the British.[citation needed]

The use of the word 'Pom' is contentious. Some British people living in Australasia find the term offensive and demeaning, others find it harmless and amusing. Attitudes to the use of the word have varied over the years, from the 1960s when slogans such as 'bash a pom a day' were heard on New Zealand radio, to today, when the word has become so entrenched that few Australians and New Zealanders see any reason to avoid using the word, some even justifying the use of the word as being 'endearing'.

:D:D:o

P.S. Please Kan some one move this "Fred" to the Sports or Joke Section. :D Thanking you in advance. :D

Well well! I will be monitoring the likes of Old Croc and his ilk during the Ashes! If an abusive adjective accompanies the word 'pom' i will be immediately contacting the mods and recommending instant suspension for racial abuse!

With the embarrassment of losing the ashes on home soil coupled with the Aussies inability to keep their emotion in check when humiliated by their rulers/superiors I doubt there will be a single Aussie left on this website come January!

I hope its all taken in good stead being a devoted aussie sport addict if there wasnt these freindly rivals between England and New Zealand it would be "bloody boring"I am proud that I decend from convicts because it has developed a sporting nation second to none in many areas.

Per population globally Australia in all sports must be that far ahead of the rest it would be mind blowing.Yes will will lose ON OCCASION but overall you name me another nation on EARTH that per head of population can match the AUSSIES.CRICKET,RUGBY,TENNIS,HOCKEY,ROWING,SWIMMING,SHOOTING,GOLF and MORE even soccer which we we just got beat buy the WORLD champions ITALY after dominating most of the field play and its not even our national game for gods sake. The list goes on and on so in summary please let me know of another nation that has per head of population a better winning record over many sports than Australia? tell me of another nation that has achieved more I will be very interested in it and so will many others you must uinderstand that the AUSSIE spirit burns brighter tham most and the never say die attitude comes through.

I AM PROUD TO BE A AUSSIE MATE! AND COME JANUARY I WILL BE IN HERE AND I CAN GUARANTEE YOU THAT I WILL BOASTING ABOUT SOMETHING THE AUSSIES HAVE WON! WE WIN THAT MUCH ITS SECOND NATURE TO US ! IT GOES TO SHOW THAT US AUSSIES ARE A PROUD BUNCH!AND SO WE SHOULD BE!!!! AFTER HAVING THE ASHES FOR SO LONG ITS ABOUT TIME YOU BLOKES MADE IT A LITTLE INTERESTING!!!

YA GOTTA LOVE PATRIOTS!

ONYA COBBER!

GOOOOO AUSSIE!!!

Tempted to muller this thread, but I suppose in the spirit of the Ashes ( which we hold ) and the Rugby World cup ( which we hold ) we should let the convicts have some joy, before we smash 'em again.

ps I dunno why they're so upset, it's only Rugby and Cricket , not even our favourite sport... :o

Did you know a fact.....................If you took every sport ever played, gave marks from 1-10 (ie best gets 10 points and 10th best gets 1 point) then England are out of sight from the rest of the World. :D

Agreed . . . so far behind that they'll never catch up . . . kind of like Uranus . . .

By the way, how can the word POM be racist when cricket teams from Oz and England is played primarily by people of the same race?

Maybe the visitors can come up with a new chant.

"We're the army, balmy army" gets a bit tiring after the millionth rendition in the crowd on a hot test match day.

Football - England ranked 4th in world , Germany - 8th - You look at rankings? :D Look at present and past form!!!!

Rugby- we don't play it

Cricket- as above

Tennis - a long time since the days of Graf and Becker, and even longer since a Brit was anywhere near no. 1

Boxing - Check out the rankings, my friend, two current world champs. Brits?

Golf - Bernard who ? true - not many good German golfers.

Snooker - not much of a sport but hey - UK best in the world.... Pool . . . Germans by far to the UK

Athletics - both crap , but we edge it hahahahahaha - you think? How do you quantify that? Check medal counts in all olympics, both winter and summer, my friend

Sailing - still us.... No idea

Lederhosen wearing - you got me.... ###### . . . well, only the mountain people in the south

Basketball - Do you even have a team?

Ice Hockey - do you have any rinks?

Handball - Hahahahahaha, nah, didn;t think so.

I could go on, but I'll kind of feel bad when you get your butts kicked at the cricket as well as not being worth much at any other sports!!!

Stay out of the arguments ,this concerns real sporting nations........... So, you'll be talking about Germany and Australia then?

:o:D

:D

Lampard? Tucked into the catnip again, have we?

Squash - no idea about rankings, do you?

Wrestling - same as above, but I can;t remember a well-known Brit wrestler, nor a German one actually

Judo - ok, list the titles and you'll see that you guys lose out here.

Curling - stick to sports, please (but even the Scots kick your <deleted> there . . . :D )

Darts - the secret to your athletic figure, Lamps? Sports!!!

The bizarre thing is, lampard, you should actually have checked out where you have the upper hand instead of just listing whatever came into your head . . .

Well, I guess it's fair that we don't play Cricket or Rugby as we'd kick your butts as well . . . :D
