Reservoir in Surin exceeds capacity due to recent rainfall

SURIN, 21 September 2015 (NNT) – The rain brought about by tropical depression Vamco has triggered extensive forest runoff in many areas of the country, and has resulted in Huai Saneng Reservoir in Surin exceeding its capacity.

Water volume at the modestly-sized Huai Saneng Reservoir, situated in Cha-niang sub-district, Mueang district, Surin rose to 24.524 million cubic meters or 122.51% of capacity. While reservoir officials have opened a sluice gate to discharge excess water, local residents are still being warned to be wary of a possible overflow of the banks of the reservoir.

In Chaiyaphum's Ban Khwao District, residents near the Chi River are being urged to move their belongings to high ground and to closely heed all warnings. Although authorities believe the situation will likely return to normal in a few days, additional routes for water discharge are being sought to handle forest runoff.

In Kamphaeng Phet, sections of the roads in Mueang and Khlong Khlung district have become inundated. Vehicles can still pass through the area, though only with difficulty. Some communities in the two districts have been flooded, and at least 6,000 rai of rice paddies and sugar cane plantations have become inundated.
