How to quote the first post?

Correct. It's done to prevent zillions of replies quoting the OP filling up the page space.

If you really need to, just copy and paste the text into your reply box, select it, and click on the little 'speech balloon" icon in the editor control panel.

You'll get something like this:-

I cheat and build a faux quote using the BBCode option. Only missing the date/time stamp.
