PM pleads with his opponents in the US to think about the country’s image

NEW YORK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha urged members of the red-shirt movement in the United States who planned to protest against him to think about the image of Thailand which may be tarnished by their actions.

Addressing the Thai people from New York in his weekly “Returning Happiness to the People” programme, the prime minister said that he did not attend the UN General Assembly on his own capacity but on behalf of the country.

He said he believed Thai people in the US love Thailand as he does and would not do anything which may ruin the image of the country. Everything they did would reflect on the country’s image and reputation, he added without elaborating.

It was reported that members of the red-shirt movement in the US would stage a protest against the prime minister in front of the United Nations head office in New York on Saturday whereas supporters of the prime minister would rally to give him moral support on the following day.

The prime minister noted that Thailand’s image had been bruised enough and, therefore, those who love the country should refrain from doing anything which might further worsen the situation.

What planet is this man living on ?

He takes over a country in a military coup then has the cheek to tell those who will demonstrate their opposition not to tarnish the country's image !

Maybe he thinks they're infringing on his patent to make a fool of himself and the country.

Allow elections to be prevented by mob. - check

Take power in a military coup - check.

Abrogate constitution - check

Select and appoint "legislative assembly" - check

Appoint self as Prime Minister - check.

Renove press freedom, freedom of assembly - check.

Introduce "attitude adjustment" aka detention without trial of opponents and critics and threatening them with financial sanctions and long term detention - check

.

Rule through article 44 - absolute power - check

Persistently find excises to put back possible date of next election - check

Off to New York to mince around as the great leader of the Nation.

And he is worried about people tarnishing the image of the Nation?

Typical propaganda tactic: accuse the enemy of your own crime. The big tarnishing was the illegal seizure of power and the destruction of democracy by Chan-ocha himself.

My daughter does that. Blames her sister when she farts or burps.

Idiot. It is Prayut and his government, plus the governments of the past 10 years that have tarnished the image of Thailand.

Add to that all the corrupt officials who allow and take part in criminal activity, such as human trafficing, prostitution, graft, murder, the list goes on.

Face is everything, that is what is wrong. With Thailand. They will kill to protect this.

"Face" i.e. image. Nothing about Truth/reality/facts, but just appearance. What a CROCK. A mature individual/nation does not "need" to hide behind a mask of smoke and mirrors. But maturity and personal self esteem are rather difficult to see/find in Land of Scams.

Democracy? In Thailand? LOL good one. Can you give some examples of the workings of "democracy"; other than a "right to vote"?

This poor sap; I almost feel sorry for him. He is so far over his head.

He's such an embarrassment for Thailand.

Maybe he should think about "the country's image" and step down.

Step down? And what then? Let the corrupt/immoral/unethical Shin mafia back in to pillage and plunder the remaining funds and people of Thailand?

With the solid proof that the Military was involved in the human trafficking, fact denied always by the PM, there is nothing which can tarnish more as now.

The PM should admit his errors in protecting the army and the Royal Police and step down.

It seems that the judges in Thailand are protecting the country now and condemn everybody who is guilty,
Time for a big overhaul if the Thai system and Kudos for the Thai Court.

It's like a husband trying to win a domestic dispute by saying "Keep your voice down, what will the neighbours think?"

This really is rather pathetic.

When in Rome......I do believe freedom of speech is allowed in New York.

succinctly and brilliantly put.. 110%on the money

The right to vote is where it all starts.

Take that away and you destroy democracy.

It doesn't matter whether you approve or disapprove of the elected government. It should be replaced or retained by the democratic process - the right to vote is the crux of the matter.

Why is he not telling those who will rally to give him support the following day, to not do so?

Simple: they traveled to the US with him from Bangkok.

Not so simple.

There are thousands of Thais in the United States and Canada who support Prayuth.

There are thousands of Thais in the United States and Canada who

vehemently disagree with Prayuth and his whole system.

Since they are living in a land where freedom of speech seems to be allowed, they are free to support and denigrate at will.
