PM pleads with his opponents in the US to think about the country’s image

NEW YORK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha urged members of the red-shirt movement in the United States who planned to protest against him to think about the image of Thailand which may be tarnished by their actions.

Addressing the Thai people from New York in his weekly “Returning Happiness to the People” programme, the prime minister said that he did not attend the UN General Assembly on his own capacity but on behalf of the country.

He said he believed Thai people in the US love Thailand as he does and would not do anything which may ruin the image of the country. Everything they did would reflect on the country’s image and reputation, he added without elaborating.

It was reported that members of the red-shirt movement in the US would stage a protest against the prime minister in front of the United Nations head office in New York on Saturday whereas supporters of the prime minister would rally to give him moral support on the following day.

The prime minister noted that Thailand’s image had been bruised enough and, therefore, those who love the country should refrain from doing anything which might further worsen the situation.

The right to vote is where it all starts.

Take that away and you destroy democracy.

It doesn't matter whether you approve or disapprove of the elected government. It should be replaced or retained by the democratic process - the right to vote is the crux of the matter.

There are thousands of Thais in the United States and Canada who

vehemently disagree with Prayuth and his whole system.

Since they are living in a land where freedom of speech seems to be allowed, they are free to support and denigrate at will.
